But it has great word of mouth. Don't know if that we change the box office, but I bet the streaming views increase.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
I'm curious what you believe how high the inflation of movie ticket prices must be when you think it would change an atrocious opening weekend into a great success only four years later.
It's actually common sense that the inflation after four years isn't high enough to change the box office result significantly but I looked it up anyway just for fun. The average ticket price was 8.97 USD in 2017 and is 9.16 USD in 2021. So with today's ticket prices The Greatest Showman would have had an "impressive" opening weekend of 8,98 million.
Needless to say that's still worse than In the Heights. So much to your facts.
Tolstoy will live forever. Some people do. But that's not enough. It's not the length of a life that matters, just the depth of it. The chances we take. The paths we choose. How we go on when our hearts break. Hearts always break and so we bend with our hearts. And we sway. But in the end what matters is that we loved... and lived.
TGS was also thrashed the critics, which hurt its first weekend, but word of mouth from the audience kept it going.

HBOMAX is not the blame, the blame is overall theater attendance is down for movies that are not blockbusters. A trend that’s being going on for years. Except for blockbusters theatrical movies are now a third tier entertainment choice. Even great movies with good word of mouth like ITH can’t make a dent.
There are a number of reasons why:
1. Movies ain’t as good as they used to be.
2. Mid budget movies are rare these days, we mostly get expensive blockbusters or small budget movies.
3. High quality cable and streaming series, which has become our first tier entertainment choice.
4. Ticket and concession prices are sky high.
5. Obviously, Covid-19
6. Unfortunately violence, this one I really really hate. People should feel safe and comfortable going to the movies without some idiot causing trouble.
7. The theater experience is not great for everyone and some people despise it.
8. The growth in home entertainment equipment and technology.
Here’s the problem, it just not streaming that is hurting theaters attendance, it’s a lot of other things.

Critics reviews of all things is not some 100% reliable metric to measure box office success or something that means the same across all movies. I'll assume you're making stuff up there unless I see a reliable source on that, first off (and didn't TGS come out during Christmas season when more people are out to watch every movie?). But as a counter example, Moulin Rouge shows up certified fresh on RT, ended up being a hit and still only made 13 million in its first expanded opening weekend. And besides inflation (from considerably more years ago that TGS but also having in common with it not having to deal with a pandemic and a same day home release unlike ITH), Moulin Rouge wasn't even number 1 that weekend either (and never got there either), but 4.
And your messaging is all over the place anyway. You bring up word of mouth for TGS but so far ITH seemed well received by paying audiences as well. You harp on the lower opening weekend for this but when people point out more successful movies so far you chimed in saying a weekend is not supposed to be the whole story. You look down on people "celebrating" specific movies (taking bigger runs into account) but now you're repeatedly posting about just this movie with one weekend out and no international rollout worth a damn yet. Maybe you should listen to your own advices.

I never heard of this movie.
I never saw ads for it.
Heard no radio ads.
Did not see ads for it during Texas Rangers or Dallas Wings games.
So where was all this promotion for this film that the article talks about?
Another issue for this film in terms of theaters is how many kids are still stuck in school? This week marks the last week for 5 of the major school districts in Texas. Today marks the first day of early release for secondary kids. Now is that the same issue in every state?
Along with baseball starting up and some folks are going to the games more than staying inside.
They had ads for in in front of both tom and jerry and raya but the ads told nothing about the plot at all and just people dancing. It was a pretty awful trailer not telling anything about what the movie was about.
Box office update--
Japan has 4 of it's 5 movies in the box office are anime films! Man i'm so jealous of japan's theatres.
Conan of course still killing it.
https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-ne...undam-hathawayIn its ninth weekend, the Detective Conan anime franchise's 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet ranked sixth, three positions down from the previous weekend. The film's total box office gross finally reached 6.93 billion yen (62.95 million USD) to become the third top-grossing film in the Conan anime franchise, surpassing the 21st film The Crimson Love Letter's domestic gross of 6.89 billion yen (63 million USD).
After disappearing from the top 10 last week, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy film series, returned to the top spot in the two-day weekend box office top 10 in its 14th weekend, which was the first time in nine weeks.
Thanks to the various efforts to promote the last run, such as the official 36-page bonus booklet "EVA-EXTRA-EXTRA," the new version EVANGELION:3.0+1.01, and the first-ever Dolby Cinema screening in the Eva anime franchise, the film earned an impressive 265,876,900 yen (2.41 million USD) on 169,000 admissions in the two-day weekend of June 12-13, which recorded an astounding 939.8% attendance and 960.5% box-office revenue compared to the previous weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 8965306780 yen (81.42 million USD) with 5,867,510 admissions in 98 days since its release.
Meanwhile, the first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway was finally released in Japan on June 11, 2021, after several postponements. While making its third-place debut in the two-day weekend box office ranking, the 95-minute film earned 523,943,800 yen (4.76 million USD) on 259,074 admissions in its first three days including Friday, becoming the top-grossing film of the three-day weekend box office ranking of June 11-13. The final box office result of the film may reach the highest of the franchise, surpassing the current record of 2.3 billion yen (20 million USD) marked by Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space in 1982.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, the second and final part of the two-part "Final Chapter" series inspired by Nobuhiro Watsuki's action jidaigeki manga, down one position to second and earned 245,000,000 yen (2.2 million USD) on 167,000 admissions in its second weekend, which was 33% down from its opening weekend. The film has surpassed the one billion yen mark.

Reviews have been mixed--
Reviews have not been kind. The Washington Post’s critic Michael O’Sullivan called it “one of the drowsiest, dullest summer movies ever,” while Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman says describing the film as over-the-top would be “an insult to the concept of having a top.” For measure, he adds, “[It] makes the most overly amped and slovenly entry in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise look like ‘North by Northwest.'”
Never heard of it but it made a million in only 19 theatre showings!

'Bo Gia' (Dad, I'm Sorry) has become the first Vietnamese film to collect $1 million in the U.S., entertainment website Deadline has reported.
It has grossed $1.08 million after becoming a big hit in Vietnamese communities like Orange County, San Jose, Houston, Seattle, Atlanta, and Orlando.
Released by fledgling shingle 3388 Films in 19 theaters at the end of May, the movie entered the top 10 list of grossers in tenth position after the first week.
It had the best opening weekend for a Vietnamese film in the U.S. with collections of $400,000.
It was screened in 38 cinemas in the second week and 47 the following week. It has the widest release of all time for a Vietnamese film in the country.
It was released in Singapore and Malaysia in April after raking in VND400 billion ($17.4 million) at home to become the highest grossing Vietnamese movie ever.
The film is an adaptation of a hit web drama directed by Vu Ngoc Dang, and stars comedian and TV host Tran Thanh. It reportedly cost VND20 billion ($870,000) to make.
It tells the story of Ba Sang, an old motorbike-taxi driver who lives in a low-income neighborhood in downtown Saigon and struggles to earn enough to take care of his family.
Too nice to his siblings and neighbors, Sang is routinely taken advantage of, to the ire of his son, a rising YouTuber who tries to force his father to change his ways.

I looked it up in my city and it is showing in 3 places with 8 showings.
Garland, Plano and the Parks Mall in Arlington Texas.
Only Plano has subtitles in English.
It's not on Demand.
Interesting starting next week it no longer shows in Plano.
Of those 3 cities-Garland has the largest Asian pop in 12%. Arlington 6.8%. Plano 1%. Garland and Arlington are top 20 in Vietnamese-American pop. Houston is number 3.
In fact Atlanta and Orlando are not even in the top 20.
So they knew where to go.
