Scarjo just won her lawsuit.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
Good for her! Disney shouldn't be allowed to get away with using same day/date to cut into her profits on the film, so this should set precedent going forward.
Shang-Chi is projected to make 10% less than Black Widow over the three-day weekend, so doesn’t this show that the negative impact was nil? Two Marvel solo projects, D+ Movie does better.. If anything, Black Widow was less anticipated with less buzz, worse reviews and lower audience scores, People who go to theaters go to theaters. People who stay home stay home.
I do not agree Black Widow was less anticipated. Maybe Shang Chi has a more loyal comic book base, But BW is very popular with people who mainly are into the MCU.

Black Widow was the most anticipated movie of the summer according to a poll by Fandango among moviegoers, Shang-Chi made the fifth place: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...er-movie-poll/
This is in line with yet another poll where Black Widow made the first place with 81% claiming to be interested in seeing the movie whereas Shang-Chi ended up in sixth place with 55% people saying they were interested in the movie. https://thedirect.com/article/black-...squad-theaters
Bottom line: Under equal circumstances BW would always have made more money than Shang-Chi. No surprise here as Shang-Chi is an obscure c-list character unknown to practically everybody besides comic book readers (who make a very small share of moviegoers) whereas BW was a face of the most successful movie franchise for ten years. Shang-Chi is comparable to Ant-Man as both are unknown characters who weren't introduced to movie audiences before their first solo effort. Black Panther and Captain Marvel on the other hand had the benefit that they were already introduced or heavily teased in two big blockbusters beforehand so audiences were already hyped for these movies. Shang-Chi, like Ant-Man, had none of that so if it at least ends in Ant-Man's box office regions (and it looks like it will) then it made what could be expected.
Furthermore looking at the opening weekend is less important in this case as Black Widow suffered from big drops in subsequent weekends, which was obviously due to the streaming release. Shang-Chi will have much better legs at the box office due to being theater exclusive and thus will likely beat Black Widow's domestic cume in the end.

Tolstoy will live forever. Some people do. But that's not enough. It's not the length of a life that matters, just the depth of it. The chances we take. The paths we choose. How we go on when our hearts break. Hearts always break and so we bend with our hearts. And we sway. But in the end what matters is that we loved... and lived.
It doesnt matter if BW would have made more or less. All that matters is what is on the contract and how that is interpreted. They made an agreement with the theaters to do Shang Chi theater only. They didn't with Black Widow. Scarlett either has a case or she doesnt. But how Shang Chi is doing isn't relevant.
