Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (to give the film its full title) came second this weekend, behind the new Jason Statham release Wrath of Man. It is now within touching distance of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon, which earned $1.72M in its tenth weekend for a total of $43.672M. It’s unheard of for an R-rated, foreign-language anime title to be almost neck-and-neck with a Disney release.

Keep in mind this does not count the vod money and only box office.

Of course, box office numbers don’t paint the full picture: Raya was simultaneously released on Disney+ for a $30 premium fee, and Disney has not disclosed the film’s gross on the platform.

Demon slayer Movie now $41m in america! Expected to make 4th place this week at the box office.

Mortal kombat drops out of the top 5.

Well the new saw has good news and bad news. Good news it's expected to hit first place and made more then some of the other films first week.

Bad news is they were expecting it to make more and it's getting not good reviews! That hurt mortal kombat.

The Chris Rock-Samuel L. Jackson R-rated horror movie took in an estimated $3.7M on Friday, including $750K previews from Thursday night, for an expected 3-day of $9.16M at 2,811 theaters. The figure falls under the estimate many were buzzing about, which was $10M-$15M. But note there’s a lot of other things going on right now in the marketplace. For the box office logs, it’s the 6th No. 1 opening for a Saw movie.


Estimates for other new fare, such as Netflix’s Zack Snyder 7-day theatrical window zombie title Army of the Dead, are also slightly off from what the industry was expecting. Army of the Dead, received by critics with a warm 74% positive and a great 83% positive from Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak audiences, is playing at 600 theaters and estimated to have clocked per industry estimates $290K yesterday and $735K for the 3-day.

The pic’s theater count is largely loaded by Cinemark locations, which I hear rep around 40%. Word heading into the weekend was that presales could tip this Snyder title over $1M for 3-days. By all unofficial records, Army of the Dead is the biggest theatrical opening for a Netflix movie. The streamer’s multi-Oscar winner Roma posted an estimated $200K over the 5-day 2018 Thanksgiving frame.


New Line/Bron/HBO Max’s Angelina Jolie western Those Who Wish Me Dead was always expected to come in the low single digits, and it’s expected to rank third at 3,188 theaters with an estimated $880K yesterday and a $2.5M opening. UAR’s Wrath of Man earned $1.05M on Friday (-65%) for a second weekend of $3.7M (-55%) in 2nd for a 10-day cume of $14.6M at 3,007 theaters (+132) in the No. 2 spot.

Those Who Wish Me Dead was, for all intents and purposes, an HBO Max play, unlike the event opening weekend pushes of Warner Bros/Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong ($31.6M) and New Line’s Mortal Kombat ($23.3M).

Even though the studio has committed to a theatrical window for its movies in 2022, note it wouldn’t be shocking if we see more of these adult-demo, potential Oscar-bait movies pulling off some sort of truncated theatrical/HBO Max play in the future. Remember all those adult films that failed for Warners at the B.O. during the fall of 2019 (i.e. The Goldfinch, The Good Liar, Motherless Brooklyn) when Joker was excelling?


If the studio had to do it all over again, odds are those would be HBO Max movies to respond to adult consumer tastes. Those Who Wish Me Dead received a B Cinemascore and a mediocre RT critics score of 62% fresh. I hear the Taylor Sheridan directed movie skewed male, with close to 90% over 25 and more than half over 35.

as the pandemic clicks down. People are distracted with proms and school year-end activities. It’s not that moviegoing is facing stiff competition as we ramp back up. But people are only going to make time for those movies they feel they can’t miss out on. As studios experiment with distribution models and severely collapsing windows, they may want to think about that. When you offer movies in theatres and in the home simultaneously, you make the product less than exclusive, significantly less than premium.

Fourth place belongs to Funimation/Aniplex’s Demon Slayer which is booked at 1,930 theaters (-170) in weekend 4 making $513K (-41%) for a weekend of $1.7M (-37%) for running total of $41.9M.

Fifth place goes to Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon which in weekend 11 posted $395K on Friday, -6% from a week ago, and a weekend of $1.59M, -17% for a running total of $46M.

Fast 9 has started with $3.4 million in korea.

Deadline reports that F9 has already broken one franchise box office record, beating the series' opening day take in Korea. Bowing with $3.4 million, F9 had the best opening day ever in the Korean market. It is also the top grossing opening for a film during the pandemic in Korea. F9 already sold over $2 million in pre-sale tickets, setting it up for a stellar run throughout the rest of its opening weekend

Demon slayer hits third place in brazil.

The darling of the moment finally arrived in Brazil! Debuting on Brazilian soil on May 13, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is already a major highlight in the rankings. According to the G1 news portal, anime has already reached third place at the national box office, second only to “ Godzilla vs. Kong “and” Pray for Us “.

I tried to look this up. Depending on the source, the official title of the latest THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS movie is either: "F9"; "Fast and Furious 9"; "Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga"; or none of the above.

Makes me sad for the definite article. I like saying "The Fast and the Furious"--just like "The Brave and the Bold" or "The Bold and the Beautiful." Did they really need to kill off the "the?" And also, "Furious" must be furious that it's become an afterthought. Surely the point isn't just that they're fast--it's that they're furious! Sequel titles aren't what they used to be.

Well overseas are doing well with fast 9, peter rabbit 2 and detective conan but here in america we don't get anything big this week.

So in other words it's going to be a slow week at the box office with nothing big out.

Movies that have an international following often open overseas first--hoping that the big worldwide box office will drive Americans to go see it when it comes out Stateside.
