The thing about videogame movies is, with the exception of the Jojovich Resident Evil movies (which I don't think critics ever loved), they tended to be short lived without spawning real franchises. The first Mortal Kombat was cool but the second one was a Fatality failure, and you can say the same or similar about releases from Tomb Raider (which at best can only be rebooted) to Warcraft (which didn't get any sequel at all). Rampage with The Rock was cool and a hit but we got no sequel from it, maybe because Rock is busy in general and the studio decided to leave well enough alone.
But it's true things are turning around. Sonic already has two hits and will get a third movie and a spin-off show if Paramount still wants to do that. Super Mario Bros would have been the biggest movie out this year if not for Barbie also doing ridiculous business, and it's surely becoming a cinematic franchise too.
