I watched The Menu and while this could turn out to be worthless anecdote (it seems the movie cost 35 million to make but I gave it two thumbs up and would recommend to watch, Anya Taylor-Joy as the main and Ralph Fiennes as the villain are fantastic), I was pleasantly surprised to watch it in a halfways packed theater (with zero pandemic restrictions anymore), which was the total opposite of when I watched Taylor-Joy's quality bomb Last Night in Soho last year, or even Taylor-Joy's The Northman this year, which was considered a flop in theaters but the studio boss apparently confirmed was able to turn a profit in post-theater sales.

Looks like the chosen movie's success has fans wanting disney to do the same with the Mandalorian first few episodes of the new season or andor final on the big screen.

Don't think disney would do that. Then again, we did get two clone wars "films" that were episodes edited into films released in theatres so who knows.

Also expect more tv shows released in theatres small releases after this.

As for bp2 budget this showed up on google. Not sure if its right yet.

The Marvel spectacle, which cost an estimated $250 million to produce and at least another $100 million to market, played in 4,396 theaters in North America. “Wakanda Forever” turnout was especially strong at large-format IMAX theaters, where domestic ticket sales of $14.2 million set a record for a November opening.

I just read that BP2 is around $550m after just two weeks.

It held up quite well outside the US and the domestic hold is coming in a bit better than earlier forecasted.

    1 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever $67,300,000 / -62.9% / Total $287,992,647
    2 The Menu $9,000,000
    3 The Chosen Season 3: Episode 1 & 2 $8,219,762
    4 Black Adam $4,480,392 -44.3% / Total $156,965,000
    5 Ticket to Paradise $3,200,000 -45.8% / Total $61,556,235
    6 She Said $2,250,000
    7 Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile $1,900,000 -40.6% / Total $43,171,784
    8 Smile $1,150,000 -50.8% / Total $104,579,396

Wakanda ran pretty similarly to MOM over the week but held a little better in its first weekend. And yes, WF is about $550-million worldwide.

That $550m is a little surprising (it held much better than expected worldwide).

Given that Thanksgiving is next week, I can see it getting to $900m WW but I'm not sure if it can hit a $1bn.

So chapek lets james blow up the avatar 2 budget so much with his water teck the film has to make $2b just to break even or disney loses!

Great job there chapek. So much for this film making a profit.

Sounds like hype by Cameron. What is the ratio? 2X budget? 3X? Even at $500 million it doesn't have to make $2B to make money.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

    This weekend is pretty stacked

    Fabelmans (Speilberg)
    Strange World (Disney)
    Knives Out (Johnson)
    Devotion
    Bones and All (Timothee Chalomet)

With Black Adam having now been released digitally, I take that as a sign to retreat after they couldn't secure a China release

Which indicates the budget is well over $500 million which is insane.

    It's possible.

The last Pirates and Avengers movies all cost over $300m each.

Given the advancements in tech (and the attendant costs of deployment) and the fact that the Avatar sequel is filmed around water, Cameron might be honest in his assessment.

I mean consider how long these Avatar sequels were reportedly in development. He was talking about these for what a decade? When did costs actually start incurring it had to have been 5+ years. I don't think it is a stretch to believe the budget was insane. The release dates were pushed back multiple times too.

Some think when james said "3rd largest" he was talking domestic not world wide. If domestic it would be $800m not $2b. Still a huge price but not $2b if that's what he meant.

Also, china confirms avatar 2 will get a china release on dec 16.
