To close to tell but ds did win most of the weekday.

It's going to be a fight for first again.

    https://deadline.com/2021/05/mortal-...le-1234748112/

Demon Slayer ended its first week with $27.7M while Mortal Kombat grossed $27.85M in its first seven days. That said, I hear Demon Slayer beat Mortal Kombat throughout the week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, despite the Midway video game feature reboot winning last weekend with $23.3M over the Japanese IP’s $21.1M.
    It's that close! $27.7M and $27.85M.

It doesn't matter who wins, but that is phenomenal for a movie like Demon Slayer.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Probably helped by MK not being a very good movie.

Demon slayers drop was expected as dragonball did as well. No shock there as many expected it. The mk drop was a surprise to most. They are saying it's a double punch of bad reviews and it on hbo max for free. Kong was on max also but it was more loved and people wanted to see it on the big screen for the effects. Tom and jerry did well also but tom and jerry are loved by generations and a kids film so it had that. For mk many saw it as just "OK" and just watched it again for free on hbo max over going to the theatres!

So in other words they are saying the hbo max stunt may have harmed mk box office! Moving it back a week to get in a fight with ds didn't help the film any also.

Or people just didn't care for mk to see it again.

This sounds like double speak. DEMON SLAYER (not available on streaming) falls almost as much as MORTAL KOMBAT--but that's okay because reasons. Yet MORTAL KOMBAT falling is bad because? Seems like people just choosing facts to support whatever they want to believe.

I was going to say that I don't support MORTAL KOMBAT (haven't seen either of these movies), because I don't support bad spelling, but then I found that "kombat" could be seen as Russian--although to be completely accurate, given Russian uses a Cyrillic alphabet, it's really Комбат. Dang that Putin, he's going to take over the world someday.

A few new movies this week and the scott pilgrim rerelease. After that some slow weeks ahead. Box office may get slow with no big movies. Would have been a great time for connected and luca if they didn't throw them in the trash to make them tv movies!

So news some good and a bad.

    Good.

    Demon slayer hit a milestone-

According to a new report from Oricon News (as detailed by Crunchyroll), Mugen Train has earned 100 million across this latest week in Japan to bring its full total to 39.88 billion yen ($366.7 million USD) with 28.87 million tickets sold so far. Together with its performances in international markets like in the United States, the full earnings for the film have now crossed 50.1 billion yen ($458.59 million USD), making history for the Japanese film industry.

The film's run in Japan might be defused a bit due to the current state of emergency in the country due to COVID-19, but the film's international success is likely to keep it afloat. Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train is still screening in theaters, with an English subbed and dubbed release in the United States. You can check out our full review of the film here!

Detective conan pulled in another 15 million this week!

Bad--Cinemark just made a "short window" deal as well.

The thing they have going for them is Paramont+ only has 35 million subscribers, Disney+ has 100 million. So there is a bigger theater audience for this than other movies.

    True. Friday update--

Wraith of man makes $3m friday.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...h=373eaff42f37

    On older releases.

    From forbes--

In other Friday box office news, Demon Slayer earned another $850,000 (-54%) on its third Friday for a likely $2.94 million (-54%) weekend and $39.505 million 17-day domestic cume. It’s already the biggest-grossing worldwide release of 2020 (it opened in Japan last October) and will pass Pan’s Labyrnth ($37.6 million in 2006) as the sixth-biggest grossing (sans inflation) foreign-language film ever in North America. It remains by far the biggest-grossing movie ever outside of films from North America or China.
Demon slayer up to $39m in america!

Mortal kombat on the other hand--

New Line and Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat earned $700,000 (-63%) on its third Friday, continuing a sharp post-debut decline. It’ll earn $2.4 million (-61%) in weekend three for a $37.9 million 17-day cume. It’s tempting to “blame” HBO Max for the decline, but the film is currently the 35th “most popular movie” on the site at the moment. It’s clear that the R-rated reboot hasn’t appealed to non-fans, and that the actual fanbase (sans superlative reviews or other crossover variables) isn’t big enough to justify a sequel.
Kong and raya on the other hand--

In better WB news, Godzilla Vs. Kong earned another $500,000 (-34%) on its sixth Friday for a $1.93 million (-32%) weekend and $93 million domestic total. Whether it gets past $100 million domestic is now mostly a matter of whether Warner Bros. wants to spend the time and money to make it happen. Considering they have a conventionally full summer slate (Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and In the Heights just over the next month), it may be a milestone not worth the hassle.

Walt Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon “came back to theaters” this weekend, in a glorified re-release spurred by deals being cut with previously disapproving theater chains. The animated action-fantasy, which went out in theaters and (for a $30 leasing fee) Disney+ in early March, earned $390,000 (+7%) in 2,315 theaters (+505) for a likely $1.65 million (+19%) opening weekend and $43.6 million cume. That’s still horrible for a big-scale Disney toon, which in normal circumstances would have been a big hit over Thanksgiving.

And as expected wraith of man in first place with only $8m. With events and theme park openings this week people went to them over movies. (sister went to six flags with her kids this weekend after a long drive and it was packed to the brim!)

Demon slayer now near $40m in america! Came in second place.

Kong doing great also. Mortal kombat dropped like a rock and hit every tree on the way down!

Detective conan and evo movies still crushing it overseas!

Mortal Kombat has 72M gross (worldwide) on a 52M worldwide budget. The marketing was **** for this movie, I think it qualifies as a box office success given the timing/streaming.

That is an amazingly small budget for a movie like this. I thought it sucked, but not because of the way it looked or the CGI.
