Looks like everything coming lower than expected but migration but its still low. Note this is a 4 day weekend so main results are monday but for early look--

Moviegoing wasn’t solid yesterday due to the last minute-shopping rush, and it will take a further tumble today as many break for Christmas celebrations. This means most titles are coming in lower than expected. Don’t blame any massive winter storm for this year’s lackluster Christmas box office: There’s no FOMO with this crop of theatrical releases; everyone can wait a day or later in the week to see them. No one is going to fill left out at the dinner table having missed a second round of Jason Momoa’s waterboard stomach.

On average, today’s box office will drop -40% from Saturday. But on Christmas Day, all pics on average will jump +112%.

    Aquaman 2

Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom made an estimated $8.7M yesterday, -36% from Friday/previews putting its 3-day around $27.6M with a 4-day between $38M-$39M. Now, these are industry estimates, not Warner Bros.’, so it’s possibly by EOD tomorrow, the David Zaslav-run entertainment conglom calls the 4-day opening for this James Wan directed sequel at $40M.
Note in a rare case aquaman may get first by sunday but lose anyways as color purple is out monday and it's pre sales are crazy for monday! Aquaman may still lose first!

    Wonka--

The studio’s Wonka at $7.2M yesterday, was actually up from Friday by +11% which would yield a second weekend of $18M and $26M 4-day. Cume through EOD Monday looks to stand at $83.5M.
    Migration--

While families went to Wonka yesterday, they eased on Illumination/Universal’s Migration with $4.1M, -29% from Friday/previews for a 3-day of $12.3M and 4-day of $17M.
    Others--

    Sony’s Anyone But You posted $1.75M yesterday off -50% from Friday/previews for $6M 3-day and 4-day between $8M-$9M.

With $1.7M on Saturday, -32% from Friday/previews, A24’s highest CinemaScore movie ever, The Iron Claw, looks to meet its forecast from yesterday with $5.5M and $7.8M.

Moksha Movies and Pathyangira Cinemas’ gang war movie Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire made $1.05M yesterday for a 3-day of $5.6M and 4-day of $6.8M.

Again, these are all industry estimates as of this morning; not studio-reported.

    Boy and the heron--

GKIDS's release of Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron grossed an estimated $3.15M over the 3-day weekend (from 1,580 locations).

Estimated 4-day weekend gross is $3.85M. Estimated total domestic (North America) gross stands at $31.28M.

Godzilla minus has passed dragonball super in america. Now 4th highest grossing japan movie in america.

Also no shock to anyone spy x family movie took first place in japan knocking wish out of first place. We will now see how good of legs wish will have in japan.

    Wonka passing $200m ww.

    #Christmas Day 2023 1. #TheColorPurple - $18M 2. #Aquaman2 - $10.5M 3. #Wonka - $10.2M 4. #TheBoysInTheBoat - $5.8M 5. #Migration - $5.4M Anyone But You - $2.1M Iron Claw - $1.9M

So aquaman had nothing to worry about as color purple did knock it out of first on christmas day he still won the weekend. Won is a loose term as it only made $40m. Great for many movies but not a big budget dc movie.

One good bit of news aquaman is still doing ok in china. May not save it however.

Note wb has 3 movies out this weekend! Pretty crazy.

Swifts movie getting greet pre sales in china.

Migration is one of the studios smaller box office openings but still ironic overperformed. Still on the low point, however. You think they would have promoted the minion short more.

Well the numbers reduced their total box office for the year projections again. It was projected earlier to be over 9 billion. In the 9.5 billion range for domestic. Because the 2nd half of the year has done not well they have released their final projections to 8.9 billion. This is domestic. A 3 billion dollar difference than 2018. Which made 11.9 billion.

I will be curious on what they initially project 2024 to be like.

The Marvels is close to be matched by Ridley Scott's Napoleon in worldwide box office with a lower budget and an R rating and longer running time. Audiences are certainly shifting. Even Wonka is proving this.

Aquaman 2 was origianlly planned for last year but the money crunch had Discovery only having so much money to spend promotion wise. So they wisely spent it on Black Adam we can say now because...while BA didn't do great , its the film that has done the best box office the last 2+ years for WBD. Even with the entire debacle with WBD blaming Johnson then.

At $38 million in 4 days, AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM had a worse box office opening than the Marvels with $40 million.

We will see if it manages to perform well and have good legs in next week.

I think you mean biggest superhero movie because Barbie is WBs biggest movie over the last few years.

Interestingly, people gave Ths Rock crap for Black Adam when in all likelihood it did as well as it did because of him.

This Christmas there's no big Disney release like Avatar from last year. Aquaman might have longer legs at the BO but so far it's been a bit rough going.

2024 is a bit hard to read. The only big superhero releases are Deadpool and Spider-Verse (if it does come out next year). This year, GotG, Across the Spider-Verse, and Ant-man generated almost $2bn combined which is still a hefty sum. Sony has a number of superhero films coming out but none of them look serious (maybe except Venom 3 if it does come out next year).

Outside of that I don't know if there any films based on super popular franchises like Barbie opening next year.

Impressive box office results for Wonka. Very impressive. Wonka not only managed to break even at the B.O. but has earned more than twice how much money it took to produce and market. The budget was $125 million. Worldwide Box Office? $272 million in just two weeks.

The Joker sequel comes out next year. That has the potential to be pretty big.

    Yeah, there are always surprises.

I hope there are some in 2024, the second half of 2023 was dreary.

Isnt that supposed to be a musical? Do you really think it will be a hit with the audience if it is?

    No idea.

Musicals could be a tough sell but I think with the Joker name and Gaga in it, it could break the mold.
