Default "Grandmaster" Thing vs Spinach Popeye

616 Ben Grimm, the Thing, gets enhanced and goes up against Popeye the Sailor.

    * Ben Grimm: Gets his orange rocky form, plus the feats of Pre-Crisis Karate Kid, Iron Fist, Karnak, Remo Williams, Cassandra Cain, Mantis (martial feats only), the Mandarin (martial feats only), Wonder Woman (current version, physical feats and bracelets), Midnighter, Champion of the Universe, and a 20th-level monk from 3.5 D&D.

    * Popeye: Starts off spinach-enhanced.

    Standard arena match.

Wait... so the starting point is Ben Grimm but then we paste on two solid Class 100s with better durability (Wonder Woman and Champion of the Universe)? So what’s the point in starting with Ben?

None really, it could have just been a composite. Ben is known for endurance and taking punishment above and beyond the call of duty, as when he fought Champion in Champ's first appearance.

Comment on anything interesting about the match.

Unless you think there's nothing interesting, just one punch and orange rocks flying across the galaxy....

With all these martial artists, Ben ought to be able to make some kind of showing.

To be honest, this composite is pretty great (although it could probably be done without Ben, Remo, Danny, Cass, Mantis and Mandarin without affecting its overall effectiveness).

    BUT

Spinached-up Popeye is a ludicrous level toon-forcer and reality warper.

Yeah, Popeye is basically Q skinned as a brick without actually having any of a brick's limitations.

Brought this up last time Popeye's spinach power was brought up, but it needs to be repeated: Popeye managed to reverse being forcibly aged to over 100 years old by eating spinach. He also managed to reverse being disintegrated by eating spinach... somehow. Possibly by keeping enough of his atoms together to eat some spinach and reconstitute himself.
Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.

So if Grandmaster Ben using his combined martial abilities manages to karate chop Popeye into subatomic particles (easily conceivable with this power set), Popeye still reconstitutes himself and then it's orange rocks flying all over the galaxy after one punch.

He straight up grabbed his soul and smacked it into his body.

I think it was the one with Ali Baba and Forty Thieves, but not the one we're he was Ali Baba.

He probably just punches him into a lamp or Ben Grimm Easter Island heads or something.

Yes, you need something more like someone who could physically punch someone to the Moon combined with Classic Dr. Strange or Classic Doctor Fate. I'm thinking of someone like Dr. Ralph Strangefate, an amalgam of Ralph Kramden, Dr. Strange and Dr. Fate.

Or, some people might argue that Ralph's feats are unsubstantiated claims. So maybe Pre-Crisis Superman combined with the Spectre.
    Power with Girl is better.

Iron Fist, Karnak, Cass, and the Manadarin look at Karate Kid and wonder why they're part of the martial arts ability composite.

    .....

It's not often this gets said, but we can throw Remo and Mantis into that group as well.
    Why are we here?

"Superboy Prime (the yelling guy if he needs clarification)..." - Postmania
"...dropping an orca whale made of fire on your enemies is a pretty strong opening move." - Nik
"Why throw punches when you can be making everyone around you sterile mutant corpses?" - Pendaran, regarding Dr. Fate

I said pretty much the same thing except for Karnak. Not from his MA skills point of view, but his weakness detection power. Between him, Val and Midnighter (and, by narrative if not by feats, Champion), they got all the skills they need.

'Weakness detection' is a thing for Val as well, who detects weaknesses in force fields. He doesn't require Karnak.

    True. Fine, forget Karnak.

Val + Midnighter + Diana + Champion = Combat beast.

Popeye warps reality with his punches. He hits a giant vulture so hard it turns into a cooked chicken on a plate with ramekins
