Oh, man and I loved that story. I was told it when I was in New York state a long time ago.

But as far as crazy pets that presidents had John Quincy Adams kept an American alligator in the bath tub at the White House.

I know there is a story at George Washington University about an elusive "hippopotamus" that lived in the Potomac River around Mt. Vernon. It is a completely unfounded story but if is fun. As for the others I have no idea.
