Default Heroes for Hire Appreciation 2020

The Heroes for Hire concept originated with Luke Cage's solo series titled Luke Cage, Hero for Hire.

As a "hero for hire", Cage tried to merge the usually pro bono world of
superheroics with the bill-paying practicality of private investigation.
Although the title changed to Luke Cage, Power Man in issue #17,
Cage continued with his for-hire activities.
Eventually he joined forces with Daniel Rand-K’ai.

Colleen Wing and Misty Knight often appeared with Power Man and Iron Fist.

Nowadays, Heroes for Hire is a group of (mostly) superpowered
mercenaries who hire out their aid in exchange for money.

    Power Man #23 Feb 1975
    "Welcome to Security City"
Luke and D.W. Griffith are heading to California to find Claire Temple.
However their bus is attacked by armed men and the bus driver killed.

After Luke quickly defeats the men, they find a town called Security City.
A town fortified from the outside world where the xenophobic people are protected by armed guards.

Entering the town, they are captured and learn that it's run by Luke's old foe Gideon Mace.

Mace had survived their last encounter and with an army of
armed men took over this town and turned it into Security City.
Under the false pretense of creating the ultimate gated community,
Mace in reality hoped to condition the people of the city to do his bidding.

This bout of exposition for the benefit of Cage and Giffith proves to be Gideon's undoing,
as Griffith had turned on the city-wide sound system allowing all the people of Security City to hear Gideon's plot.
This causes the people of Security City to revolt and riot against Gideon and his army.
This gives Luke and D.W. the opportunity to break free and flee the city,
leaving the people of Security City to deal with Gideon and his men on their own.

Script by Tony Isabella, pencils by Ron Wilson, inks by Dave Hunt.

    Power Man #24 Apr 1975
    "Among us Walks...Black Goliath!"
While stopping to see a circus in California on their search of finding Claire Temple,
Luke Cage and D.W. Griffith witness one of the trapeze artists about to fall.
Luke saves him, and it turns out to be one of the Great Gambonnos of the Circus of Crime.
While wandering the circus grounds, Luke sees Claire and confronts her.
She tells him that she is here to see her ex-husband. She explains that her ex is Bill Foster, who she met,
fell in love with, and married in university and that after their marriage Bill became involved with the Avengers.

At that moment, Black Goliath who has been forced to be a member of the Circus of Crime appears

and isn't too happy when he finds the woman he still loves in the arms of another man.

Their fight is cut short however when both are immobilized by
the Circus of Crime and put on the hypnotic spell of the Ringmaster.

NOTE: First appearance of Bill Foster as Black Goliath.

Script by Tony Isabella, pencils by George Tuska, inks by Vince Colletta.

Been reading through the original Power Man & Iron Fist series recently, as there are no new comics coming out.

I have to say, it's way better than I thought it would be, the Duffy/Gammill issues especially stand out. I've never read all of it before so it's been a pleasant surprise.

Also, if Marvel Studios comes out with a proper big budget movie or Disney+ series with PM/IF I would be one happy camper. Meaning better actors and effects and whatnot than the Netflix stuff.

it would be great to see an animated ongoing series or mini series that focused on the Heroes For Hire team.

It was one of the most entertaining books Marvel was putting out at the time. It kept things small-scale, with a lot of the joy coming from the chemistry Mary Jo Duffy made happen between the leads. Kerry Gammill was just perfect for the book, and losing him was like losing Davis from Excalibur. Denis Cowan replaced Gammill as the regular penciller, and his work was more ambitious and arty, but he couldn't convey the warmth and character in the faces that Gammill could, imo.

Another example of breaking the fourth wall (house ad featuring PM/IF):
