Her name is no different than Dr. Doom, Magneto or Sinestro. All kind of goofy but it doesnt matter because so much work was put into their characters.

There is a lot of validity to the Editorial problems though. Many writers have gone on record as saying how much they were hampered by Editorial...Gail SImone, Phil Jimenez. Phil had Hippolyta as a major figure in his run but editorial decided she would die in the big Superman crossover and then decided it had to be in the Superman book...NOT EVEN in Wonder WOman's title. Even the Superman writers lobbied for it to be in the appropriate title, finally Editorial gave in. With Gail, she came in off Greg Rucka's very successful run and then was told to not use any characters from Greg's run. This has happened time and again. People complain about the inconsistent use of characters, that goes back to editorial removing characters from the board. Would Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon have become as important to their franchises if they had as much interference? Doubtfully.
Editorial needs to see Wonder Woman and her peripheral characters the same as they do Superman's, Batman's even Green Lantern's and the Flash.

She also wanted Genocide to be created from Knockout's corpse, but this was vetoed and we got that weird "future dead body of Diana" thing instead. I believe she also wanted Amazons Attack to be entirely due to Circe casting a spell on all of them, but this was vetoed as well. And Greg Rucka's run was cut short by OYL, and his original plan for Amazons Attack would likely have been much better than what we got.

I agree, I don't know why people get so caught up in names when it comes to comic books. The grand majority of the characters have goofy names.
Reading List (Super behind but reading them nonetheless):
    DC: Currently figuring that out
    Marvel: Read above
    Image: Killadelphia, Nightmare Blog
Other: The Antagonist, Something is Killing the Children, Avatar: TLAB
Manga: My Hero Academia, MHA: Vigilanties, Soul Eater: the Perfect Edition, Berserk, Hunter X Hunter, Witch Hat Atelier, Kaiju No. 8

Goofy names are even part of the FUN. But for some reason Wonder Woman's villains seem to have a hard time shaking the stigma more than others or having it count against them for why they can't be taken seriously. Looking at Villainy Inc, yeah the names like Eviless and Blue Snowman are silly. But so are Professor Zoom the Reverse Flash and Gorilla Grodd. One of my roommates actually laughed when I told him that was the legit name of Flash's arch nemesis, but still would consider him a potentially cool character because he knows not to take it 100% seriously to begin with.

It all has silliness to it.

And when they do that for Wonder Woman you get half-assed big attempts to "update" usually have her losing her powers and then regaining her powers, what is her status (hero, demigod, god, or something else), her love life (teasing she might be bisexual or lesbian, and who is she dating/sleeping with), her origin story (is she made of clay, the daughter of Zeus, Aries, or Hades) or her costume, and her hair style. Maybe all of the above or just a few like when JMS took over the book and that lasted how many issues because no one like the story line and/or a lot of WW fans thought it was stupid and didn't care?

Not to mention Greg Rucka had plans for staying on WW past Infinite Crisis and One Year Later, but was apparently kicked off the book for arguing with Dan Didio over the consequences of WW killing Maxwell Lord (Didio wanted her to go on the run and Rucka disagreed). And then got screwed out of the Earth One WW book by the same person after doing a bunch of writing jobs for DC to get the book in the first place.

DC editorial has constantly hobbled the property and were more interested in playing their petty backroom politics with the character. This sort of petty micromanaging is what got you-know-who finally fired by the higher ups at WB.

Effing DiDio. That guy. Rucka's run was poised to be a new Golden Age. He evolved the pantheon, utilized the amazing work of Berger and Perez, was telling modern day myths exploring all the facets of WWs mythology, and Dan just took a hammer to it because he doesn't like nor get the character. It's disgusting. He needed to be gone DECADES ago.

Oh, I'll agree that Editorial has hampered some ideas... Then again, I've seen a lot of ideas and writers that NEEDED to be hampered more by lazy editors. However, as much as people dislike Didio, my point is that she has ALWAYS had these problems. The problems are bigger than any one Editorial team and that lackluster runs is really part of her tradition now.

    .
I have to say I absolutely HATE the idea that she is the daughter of Zeus. For me it's Clay baby all the way. Clay baby is unique and special. A miraculous birth by the gods is interesting.

It's not even a pro-feminist 'We don't need a man' thing either... I hadn't even thougth about that aspect, but it's actually kind of cool for Wonder Woman to have NEVER needed a man for her abilities... but child of Zeus... is boring. It doesn't make her more powerful, it makes her mundane. Zeus has been dropping off demigods every time he looked at earth. What makes her different than Heracles and Helen of Troy... Unique is always better.

If DC wants Wonder Woman to appeal to males, then DC should lean into that and adjust her more to appeal to males. For example, they could raise the sexual appeal of the character and the book in general. It sounds crass, and I'm sure there would be objections from people, but characters like Vampirella, Bayonetta, Devil Hunter Yohko, Angela, Red Sonja, Dawn, Lady Death, and several others are the way they are for a reason, and they aren't meant to appeal to girls.

Yet, there is a clear conflict here, because if you're also trying to brand Wonder Woman for girls, this type of content wouldn't work.

yeah but the branding is for different markets like merchandise and outside media like dc superhero girl. Wonder woman in mainline comics core readers are males.

So is there any actual evidence that men will only consume media starring a female character if she's a glorified pin-up? And how well do these female characters sell in an age where porn is more readily available?

Give the mythology and warrior crap a rest. Don't get rid of it entirely, I like that aspect of her enough, but... Superman is a science fiction hero but not all of his stories are science fiction. Sometimes it's street level, sometimes mundane, sometimes cosmic. There's variety.

Lately every writer wants her to fight Greek Gods and be a player in some mythological epic. Let her be a damn superhero in her own book, fighting her villains, having moments with her supporting cast and just being Wonder Woman.

I am so sick of repackaging Diana with a sword and shooing away the rest of her universe and character in an attempt to appeal to men who can't handle her.

DC seems convinced that she's a one-note mythology hero who can only be Xena, but with powers, and it's killing her book. The lack of guys in her supporting cast doesn't seem that important to me because they can't even get Steve right. There's too much male ego involved trying to force him into an action hero so men will respect him, and for Steve to truly be worthy of Diana, I think he needs to be above that. I'd be so down for him to retire from field work and move into being a social worker or something supportive of others.

Until they can make the most important male figure in her cast work, I wouldn't look to add more.

DC really needs give her back her bikini, and better artists, and for god´s sake better writers, I didn´t like any of her writers, ironically she is better written being on Justice League than her own adventures, even her own live action movie and animated movies write her better.
