It seems more to me as if he was channeling his optic blast into the sword, like Storm's lightning sword.

And you're not jesting at all. Unfortunately, the mouse will own Nintendo before I'm dead and FExX-Men will be entirely likely.

I think of this as a mistake. While I think Jean Grey should be able to do any TP/TK a trick I don't think close quarters and weapons fit her aesthetic.
