one question:

Was it EVER explained how his powers work?

Because I read the Comic where they were on Krypton and he didnt have problems with his powers (he also stated that he has no problems, because his powers dont come from the sun).

So are he and Jonathan Lane Kent like META-HUMANS??

yeah, the Mia Dearden/Cir-El Supergirl could emit red sun energy and presumably absorb it too. She wasn't a natural Kryptonian but was a Human infused with a carefully concocted set of Kryptonian genes. So it's possible Kon-el has a wider energy range or something.
