You know it will end in tears when you have a melancholic country song sung by a bluesy soul singer like Dorothy Moore.

Friends I could count on I could count on one hand
with a left over finger or two.
    I took them for granted,
    let them all slip away,
now where they are I wish I knew.
They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn,
go through life parched and empty
    knee deep in a river,
    dying of thirst.

    Sometimes I remember
    sweethearts I've known,
    some I've forgotten I suppose.
    One or two still linger,
    oh I wonder now why
    I ever let them go.

They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn,
go through life parched and empty
    knee deep in a river,
    dying of thirst.

This version of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" - with Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. It's an invitation for the Blues to come curl up in your lap and sit for a while.

"Dead Man's Will" by Iron and Wine. It's a tale of letting life slip away -- until it's far too late.

I've never gotten through this song without crying and don't think I ever will.

Oh god, especially knowing he went into a coma for months shortly after recording this. It became a hit and he didn't even know at the time.

I know, as if it wasn't sad enough already.

    Content notice: Suicide.

This is an R&B song that will NOT make you feel better when you are feeling down.

"Ghost Town" by Sam Outlaw is more recent country song about things slipping away into the past.

Sorry nothing romantic. But I have many songs in mind.

    This classic.

    Another "sad" classic.

Especially after what happened to him later.

I don't know if this counts, but I like listening to sad music like this:

Thank you for that Marvin Gaye one, that is a great one from the Great One.

Reminds me of this one, which is kind of a sequel:

Every day is a gift, not a given right.

After Elvis Costello and Brill Building legend Burt Bacharach worked together on the tear jerker "God Give Me Strength" for the movie Grace of My Heart, they decided to do an album of beautiful, sad songs together. This is about the saddest on there:
