Actually her armor was made from a Naboo yacht that once belonged to Palpatine, hence the silver/chrome look.

As for Smith, that was a rumor but was never officially announced and Matt Smith himself said it wasn't true. It's possible Smith might've read for a role in the film, as many actors do. Jessie Plemons for instance read for one of the roles in TFA, possibly Finn, Poe or Ren, but was not cast.

Now that I think about it, Snap Wexley also had a fair amount of EU backstory too. He was one of the stars of the Aftermath trilogy, and had a large role in the Poe Dameron comics and in Resistance Reborn. He returned for ROS and got some dialogue but had a pretty quick death, which probably could've been averted had he held up for about a minute longer....also those EU novels basically had him be Wedge's stepson, so it's a bit awkward knowing that having Wedge have his cameo a minute later with no reaction whatsoever (Then again the cameo itself was fairly awkward regardless of EU context-Lawson looked a bit bored).

Wonder if the novel adaptation brought that up.

Well, in context of the scene, Wedge wouldn't have known what happened when we saw him.
Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."
