I don't see why streaming not going away has to do with this weird Disney decision coming, or how streaming links to covid to speed things up? Unless you're saying that streaming was always going to replace theaters and covid sped it up? In which case I strongly disagree with the premise.

That it's not weird. We've been seeing studios increasingly experiment with straight-to-streaming options and Disney clearly read the tea leaves there, as evidenced by the amount of cash they're spending on their Star Wars and MCU shows. WB has now responded in kind with HBO Max.

It's only gonna get more and more common as time goes on.

History repeats. In the 1918 flu movie studios got all the movie chains. Now the judge says studios can buy movie chains again in the second big virus.

And most of them are uninterested, preferring to focus on streaming.

What’s clear is that this time around studios are not sweeping in to buy the distressed assets. Sources tell Deadline that major movie studios have no plans to get in the exhibition. With their focus on streaming – including big streaming-focused restructurings this week alone at NBCUniversal and Warner Bros — they prefer to spend billions building up their own services than worrying about the local staffing, leases, property taxes and city ordinances that come with running a theater.
Amazon and Netflix are said to be the sole entities who might wanna buy up theaters.

They have a theater in my town (and a couple other states I'm aware of). I like their business in general. (Website: https://www.marcustheatres.com/).

Whether the owner is right that theaters will prove to be more popular then streaming remains to be seen, but it could be true.

    Good sourcing on this.

In fact, studios are interested in making the most money possible. There's no evidence anywhere to suggest that theaters aren't the best source available

The United States no longer cares about antitrust laws.

Unless it's tech companies they don't understand like Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon, etc. But even then it's just been barks and no bites yet.

Not true. What we have is a lawless Administration and GOP Senate that does not believe in enforcing any business laws or regulations.

So it looks like some movies will air in Canadian theatres but not American theatres:

What will happen to Dune? I was hoping for another tentpole franchise there, 3 movies and 1 TV show but I guess with COVID its another doomed WB venture which I seriously hope it won't be. The director and cast look promising but on the other hand my favourite novel (most of the days) will not be judged by unwashed mass audiences, if the 1st movie tanks and the sequels are scrapped.
