Duel was a made for TV movie, Spielberg's first theatrical film was Sugerland Express.

A sad one is Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter, since he never made another.
A recent excellent film was Regina King's One Night in Miami. Though she had previously directed a lot of TV episodes.
Ordinary People and Dances With Wolves are probably unfairly maligned because they beat better Scorsese movies for Best Picture, but both are good films.
A few more I'd add are the time travel story Primer, Terms of Endearment, Closely Watched Trains and Easy Rider.
Good choices.

I think Richard Donner: The Omen. But I am not sure if it is his first feature. He directed A LOT of TV.
