Even if you want to be charitable...

It's all about at the "Maybe?..." level.

Then, another "Maybe?..." gets tossed onto the pile like it is actually cementing what will come to pass.

What it is actually doing is the opposite. The more examples you see, the more it looks like "So, At Best We've Got A Good Solid 'Maybe?...' Here?..."

For those not keeping up in the box office or anime thread we have our first battle for the box office post virus!

Mortal kombat and demon slayer are neck and neck to the point even hollywood does not know who will win! Of course movie theatres win as both films combined are expected to make $40m this weekend!

AMC is saying demon slayer is outsellng mortal kombat 4 to 1 while others say it's dead even!

Interestingly enough, I got a buddy who runs movie theaters out in Los Angeles who said ticket sales for Mortal Kombat and Sony's Demon Slayer anime flick are neck and neck; Demon Slayer currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with twelve reviews.

We have a classic battle for the box office! Plus don't forget gvk is still out!

Went to get demon slayer ticket for today last night and it was crowded! Really nice to see the movies alive again!

True but more people are getting the shots as well. My mom got hers and i got my first and will get the second in a few weeks. When i said post virus by the way i didn't mean the virus was gone just post after it started. Sorry for the mix up.

With that said people are going out again. Our theatre was packed last night and so was our demon slayer screening.

Saw fans dressed up as both mortal kombat and demon slayer outfits last night at our showings!

By the way demon slayer made $9.5m on friday and mortal kombat friday made $9m. It's that close! This really is the first "battle for the box office" we had in a year. It's nice to see again.

Kong passed the $400m mark as well!

But box office still remain weak. Small movies are getting practically zero box office numbers. Big movies are doing good on opening weekend, but drops off quickly. Domestically, GvK made only $4 million in only it’s 3rd weekend.
Just can’t focus on opening weekend numbers for big movies, you got to look at the whole picture.

Seems like the whole picture would include the box office continually strengthening.

North American audiences with streaming available in the middle of a pandemic already showed they can drop more than 50 million per weekend out of their pockets to a theater when new releases are out. And that's when the presumed bigger guns of this year like the new Fast or Spider-Man aren't out yet.

I used to think Demon Slayer would debut behind the last Dragon Ball Super, which is not only a longer-running anime franchise but opened pre-pandemic. Demon Slayer opened super twice as much as Dragon Ball Super with pandemic restrictions. At this point I won't be surprised if big anime openings post-pandemic continue to increase.

And as far as smaller movies goes, the movie literally called Nobody, starring a nobody (no disrespect to Better Call Saul fans) has been in the Top 5 domestically for over a month, has grossed more than its budget domestically which would be its bigger market, has already grossed the conventional "2.5 times the budget to get even" globally, and in addition to as I said not leaving the Top 10 domestically yet, it hasn't even been released everywhere internationally yet. And this is all before whatever the proverbial streaming profit is. And it's not even a whole family pic like GvK, it's rated R like the #1 pic this weekend.

GVK is up to $400m. Demon slayer is up to $456m.

Plus they said films like that faith movie and the scary movie unholy both did not do to bad at the box office. Nobody did ok also.

Detective conan has made $38m ww in just a week!

It does show the box office is recovering.

Mortal kombat up to $23m in america.

Demon slayer now up to $21m in america from monday sales. (it's catching up with mortal kombat again!)

    Also deadline calls hollywood out!

Here’s where the industry needs to wake up. Now that we know people will go back to the movies after Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer, we need more films. Like big films. Technically, we’re not going to see another big box office weekend again until the Memorial Day frame, May 28-31, with Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and Disney’s Cruella, which is essentially a month from now. Open Road has its horror movie Separation on April 30 and United Artists Releasing has the Guy Ritchie-Jason Statham feature Wrath of Man on May 7. Exhibition needs more.

Godzilla vs Kong made 4 million in its 4th weekend, not its 3rd weekend, and that number is fine. The drops from weekend to weekend were -56%, -43%, and -45% which is perfectly normal for a blockbuster.

If you want to look at the whole picture: Godzilla vs Kong is now at 86 million domestically, locked to surpass 90 million until the end of its run, whereas Godzilla: King of the Monsters made 110 million in pre-pandemic times. That's not much of a difference considering that many theatres in the US are still closed. Looking at the worldwide box office GvK already surpassed the result of its predecessor with 406 million to 386 million. That gap will likely get bigger when cinemas reopen in major European markets like UK, France, and Germany, so the final box office numbers will be clearly better than those of Godzilla: KotM in the pre-pandemic era.

Legendary and Warner also consider it a success as they are in talks with Adam Wingard regarding a sequel: https://variety.com/2021/film/news/g...Pos=3#cxrecs_s
Tolstoy will live forever. Some people do. But that's not enough. It's not the length of a life that matters, just the depth of it. The chances we take. The paths we choose. How we go on when our hearts break. Hearts always break and so we bend with our hearts. And we sway. But in the end what matters is that we loved... and lived.

Nope, the 4m is 3rd weekend for GvK.
The whole picture mean every movie at the theater, not just one or two movies.
Overall the box office is down worldwide, because smaller movies is not getting an audience. Every non blockbuster that has no pre-existing material is suffering at the b/o.

I'm going to be honest - I don't think smaller movies is the backbone of theater survival you think it is.

Yes they are, smaller movies and non blockbuster movies make up 97% of all movie releases.

How much of the actual box office $ do they represent?
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
