    Default QUASAR Earlys 90's SERIES

I believe it ran for 60 issues. Would anyone recommend it?

I would as well. I'm actually in the process of re-reading it right now. Like any long-running series, it has its ups and downs, but overall it is a really fun series--especially if you are a fan of the cosmic side of Marvel.

The first year - slightly slow as they build up and established the quasar character & his supporting casts with some guest stars.
2nd year onwards - started to pick up with the squadron supreme being stranded in the 616 universe. "Journey into mystery" , "Cosmos in collision" story arc were awesome. Quasar went into "what-if" universes and then from the wider omniverse to the new universe was great.

Unfortunately , the series got a bit bogged down by all the crossovers - infinity gauntlet , war , crusade , operation galactic storm etc although gruenwald tried to put his own spin on the crossovers as best he can .

Series started to run out of steam towards the end. Poor art and lackluster story telling drag its quality down.

Had some really great content between event tie-ins and the later issues were laden with horrible art but that was true to nearly any book at marvel during those years that wasnt xmen or spiderman.

Hard to go wrong with Gruenwald and Quasar was one of his babies.

Venom drew the short straw when he went up against Quasar in an acts of vengeance tie-in.

Quasar is underrated , should have gone up against Green Lantern rather than Wonder Woman in JLA/Avengers.

Some of the early issues has Quasar facing off against the likes of Venom , Klaw , Living laser , Absorbing man , cosmic spider-man , terminus etc so it's pretty cool.

The first half are great comics, although the first year is the weakest of that material. After that, it becomes more hit and miss. Constant crossovers don't help.

YES. I would recommend it very much. In the extreme angst 90's, Quaze's regular good guy positive outlook was a breath of fresh air. First issues is kind of build up. One issue stories set to establish Quaze's place in the MU, as Mar-Vell's successor as Potector of the Universe. It's quite good, but still not living up to it's full potentiaal. By it's end, with Journey into Mystery, Quasar starts to fire on all cillinders, and really goes on overdrive with Greg Capullo's arrivel and Cosmos on Collision. Despite some fill-in artists not up to the telent of the regular crew, Quasar stays strong right up to the 50th issue or so. Even constantly having it's storylines hijacked by events. The last year is kind of uneven, especially art-wise. Gruenwald tried to continue Quasar's adventures with the Star Masters mini-series, and a few appearences in the Cosmic Powers anthology. If you like the series, it's worth tracking down.

    Peace

    The QUANTUM CREW

You knew it was only a matter of time.

The Uranian (Bob Grayson) flew to Uranus with his father before World War II, and returned to fight the forces of evil in the 1950s as Marvel Boy! One of America's first and best heroes, Bob used Wrist Bands modeled after the more powerful and unique Quantum Bands, along with telepathic powers to fight crime until he returned home to Uranus to mourn the death of his father.

Years later, an Eternal with Bob's likeness was sent to America to prepare for an invasion, wearing the actual Quantum Bands. He went mad, and after self-destructing, Wendell Elvis Vaughn ended up putting on the Quantum Bands to save his own scientist father and a group of Shield agents from terrorists. Little did he know from that day forward he would be named the Protector of the Universe.

Eventually, after dying a couple of times and much conflict, Wendell would decide to retire and a young intelligence agent, Avril Kincaid, would acquire the bands from Wendell and serve, for a short time, as the new Quasar. Avril's death would inspire Wendell to once again put on the Quantum Bands, but he now believes that Avril is alive somewhere out there in the Universe - with a new pair of Bands!

During the course of his adventures, Wendell learned that others had worn the bands before him - including the first bearer, the "Stygian Starbender," Glakandar. He is not the only of his race to do become a great hero -- most recently a Stygian that went first by the name Quasar, and then by the name Neutron served in the Imperial Guard, but sacrificed himself in Realm of Kings #5 to save the rest of the Guard. He was replaced by another Stygian, who took up his name and shares the same abilities.

The day comes when the Avengers are called upon to save the Stygian planet from great destruction. Quasar hears the call, and requests that Spectrum, Blue Marvel, and Captain Marvel join him. As they are about to leave, Uranian flies down in his UFO and offers to take them all - he, too, had heard the call. With him is his fellow member of Agents of Atlas, M-11. On the way to the Stygian planet, they come across Avril - battered, and broken, but still very much alive and wearing her own Quantum Bands. "I'll explain after we save Neutron's planet," she says breathlessly. The team arrives, join Neutron up in space, and discover that he is not alone - Glakandar is there as well. He explains to everyone that Stygians can live for thousands of years, if not killed as the first Neutron was, in a black hole.
All eyes turn to the planet, clearly under siege, and the adventure begins:

    Quasar (Wendell)
    Quasar (Avril)
    Blue Marvel (Adam Brashear)
    Spectrum (Monica Rambeau)
    Uranian (Bob Greyson)
    Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers)
    M-11
    Neutron
    Stygian Starbender (Glakandar)

The most unique version of heroes yet - the QUANTUM CREW!

I liked Paul Ryan's artwork, but felt the addition of Greg Capullo really helped the series -- and introduced my favorite outfit for him.

Gruenwald and Ryan were the creative team on the New Universe D.P.7 series. I recommend that book -- probably the best of the NU titles.

It did have the most bizarre plots like the pregnancy, the attack.of the previous protectors of universe,. The Starbrand getting grafted onto his girlfriend the lurid crossover with starblast. Etc. Also was mildly amusing him being so much of a enthusiastic supporter of cap that even Erick thor called him out on it.
