That's a very good point! What you wrote reminded me of the Quantum Leap episode "Lee Harvey Oswald".
It was revealed that, according to the history of the present day home Earth that the main character Sam Beckett is from, Jackie Kennedy was killed along with JFK.
It is then revealed that Sam's actual mission was to save her, thereby correcting 'what once went wrong' and he succeeded!

Holy Moley!.... Sam Beckett.... the last name of the character is exactly the same as the Sliders member Maggie Beckett
Quantum Leap was before Sliders... Is it possible that the characters Sam and Maggie are somehow related?

Like I said, I can see a continuation that ends the story, but a reboot today would miss the point. It's a series that benefits most from the old model of television shows - long seasons, episodic stand alone format. A short tight storyline is the norm now, and just doesn't feel like a new earth every episode of Sliders.
