Default DC Africana Appreciation: Vol. 2

    [name all the characters :-p]

it's the return of the Africana Appreciation thread! 2020 and we back BAY-BEEEE!! I suspect we're in for some really amazing things from our heroes of color coming down the pipeline, Luke Fox's getting a push as (and possibly/hopefully post-) Batman, The Terrifics and Outsiders (both led by Black heroes) have both been going strong, Naomi was a big success, and, most excitedly, MILESTONE HAS FINALLY BEEN SETTLED Y'ALL!! So, once again, this is a thread dedicated to DC's black characters, from Africans, to those across the African Diaspora, and including black identifying Aborigines; however utilized or underutilized the character may be and regardless of alignment. I will try to keep this up to date so feel free to post anyone I missed and I will add them to the list.

    The People's Guardian!
    John Stewart Appreciation
    https://community.cbr.com/showthread...reciation-2020

Unsurprisingly, based on the last poll of 134 votes, John Stewart has emerged as DC's most popular black character with 24.63% of the votes! He's followed closely by Vixen with 20.90% and Cyborg in a distant third with 8.96%. I will be excluding these three off the poll this time to encourage more diverse votes and get people to really think on their top pick; mix it up a bit. Vixen and Cyborg will be readded to the next poll once this one is closed (assuming I'm the one doing it).

Great thread bro! I voted for Black Lightning, though I’m curious to see how the poll ends up because there’s no John, Vixen or Cyborg.
Done with DC. Can't handle the constant whiplash! Time to go on a hiatus!

I voted Amanda Waller. I don't know how she's depicted in the comics very well, but that chuby lady was so ruthless and bad ass in The JL, JLU Animated series.

I love Waller when she's written good. Sadly, she's so easy to write so one dimensional.

I went with Other, for Dr. Mist.

(But it could have been Battalion or Amazing Man or Kaldur'ahm or Vixen or Bumblebee, you'll never know for sure!)

I'm so ready for DC to see Naomi's success as indication that we do want more black heroes as leads.
My biggest wish right now is for a revamped Nubia by someone like Vita Ayala. A black Wonder Woman has too much potential for DC to keep ignoring.
I recently got interested in the character and was shocked to find out she appears in like 5 issues of the main continuity. The most that's been done with her is probably in the Injustice comic or Multiversity, which isn't much at all.
If done right, I can see Nubia gaining a similar level of cultural significance to Kate Kane as Batwoman (a diverse new lead that's portrayed as an equal to the original hero and is capable of sustaining books and outside media on her own).

I will also keep hoping they finally give Vixen an ongoing, that Global Guardians gets a revamp, that Cyborg gets another solo and is portrayed as the flagship he can be and that Steel escapes limbo.

Thanks! I'm thinking Black Lightning will end up being the winner on this one considering he was making a mild comeback towards the end on the other poll. He ended up placing 4th, not too far behind Cyborg. Plus, he's been on a trend upward in the public consciousness and at DC his show premiered; His show has been the most consistently well-received, he's officially part of the CW Justice League, he had a huge arc on Young Justice: Outsiders and became chairman of their Justice League by the end, and he's the head of the Outsiders in their title (please god let them drop Batman from the book and give it fully to Jeff). After him, I'm predicting Mr Terrific, Aqualad, and "Other" getting a bigger pull of the votes than last time and, depending on if DC can properly capitalize on her, Naomi coming through as a dark horse in terms of votes (not gonna be top 3 tho,way too new). I would love if Duke got some more love than last time but he's been losing steam, he needs a big moment to get people more excited about the character.

Thank you! I'm actually a little proud of how the collage out lol finding the right pictures was tedious. I voted Black Lightning myself but it could've easily been Duke Thomas or Mr. Terrific (two characters that i would love to see work together) if i thought about it like 2 seconds longer.

I'm in, I choose Aqualad in the poll, he's my current fav with Naomi being 2nd.

I want to see more of Bumblebee (she's DC's first black female right?) and Steel (Natasha and John)

I also feel like more can be done with Bloodwynd, especially since DC has a supernatural title now.
Reading List (Super behind but reading them nonetheless):
    DC: Currently figuring that out
    Marvel: Read above
    Image: Killadelphia, Nightmare Blog
Other: The Antagonist, Something is Killing the Children, Avatar: TLAB

The issue is the usual set of folks and trolls will make every excuse to say it was a fluke.

It can't be a fluke when you look at other companies or outside comics.

Black panther did not get to where he is with ONE solo run and that was it. For all the hate Bendis get-at least he is using Naomi beyond her book snf not just as back up fodder.

I need to find time to read that book. Heck I bought for crying out loud.

Mr. Terrific because I absolutely love the role he’s been given recently. The resident super science adventurer in the vain of pulp heroes like Doc Savage. The multiverse hopping genius with peak human skills. Also love the fact that Lemire had him crossover with Tom Strong, a character who is inspired by those types of heroes.
