Yep, the red haired woman is Nina DaCosta, archeologist, Berto’s mom. She was rarely around because of her work related travel. Though her citizenship is listed as Brazilian, I’ve never been sure if she’s meant to be a White Brazilian ethnically or of different origin.

Both of his parents were a bit older for having a 14 year old son. I think of it like they both were passionate about their careers and had Roberto when they were like 40 or 45, in an attempt to save their marriage. Her nationality is difficult to peg down. I've only seen her in a handful of stories, and they never say exactly where she's from. She could be Brazilian, she could be from the USA, she could be from Europe. As far as I know, it hasn't been specified in the canon(and whoever is writing these bios is just guessing and filling in the blanks).
