Are the Infinity Stones too powerful for the average human?

Hi guys

In Avengers Endgame when Iron Man uses the Infinity Stones, or Infinity Gauntlet, it kills him. Are the stones or the gauntlet that powerful in the comics or was this a way to write Iron Man out of the MCU?

Because I remember that there was a story when Steve Rogers actually broke the Infinity Stones and while they did harm him they didn't kill him.

No downside to using them in the comics that I remember. Cap broke them because he tried to use them to affect a different universe.

Anyone can use them with ease.

Except the Elders of the Universe, most of whom could not consciously use them until Thanos came along to school them, sigh...
