It strikes me that the interesting and approachable hook for the classic mid-tier DC superhero is what makes him so hard to use these days: he’s The Man Of The Hour, the guy who pops a pill to get powers for sixty minutes!

Not a huge follower of Jon Kent...would he as a half Kryptonian be top tier or mid tier? I'm assuming all full Kryptonians are regarded as at the top end of the top tier.

Oh, Blue Devil? Captain Comet? Strata, Garv? Rocket Red, any of 'em? Ralph Dibney? Plas? I know Morrison was all hot and bothered about how powerful he was, but... Is Metamorpho top tier or mid?

Does he still have that power of his, the "invisible to tech" thing?

I like kid!Jon and would consider half-Kryptonian as top-tier on powers if he had half strength, etc. (as I would have preferred), but they went the "hybrid vigor" route and said he should be more powerful than his father. No idea if that was walked back.

Ralph's the only one I know well enough to comment on, and he's strictly street-level, as far as I'm concerned. I adore him and Sue in their old stuff. But his powers just aren't enough to make him qualify for mid-tier in pure strength/power, so far as I'm concerned. I like him solving mysteries.

Yeah I know nothing about Hourman (Hour Man? Hour-Man?) outside reading his wiki entry years ago and one Robot Chicken skit. Have to ask though - why does that make him so hard to use these days?

I don't remember reading anything to the contrary. I suppose it's still canon.

I feel like BL is in the low to middle end of high tier, full control of electricity( not sure if he has control over magnetism like Static) is an impressive powerset. Their image would quickly improve if DC gave them feats.

Ha, the way you describe him makes it sound like superhuman Viagra

Metamorpho's powerset makes him top tier, dude can mimic elements (and sometimes control them). Plas is top tier. Ralph Dibney is low tier. Not sure about the others.

    The drug angle.

Leaving aside whether BL is mid tier or high tier (a blurry line between high mid tier and low high tier), how does giving feats improve their image? It might help establish whether they are middle tier or high tier, but it doesn't make them more popular, more well known in general, or make writers want to use them more.

That's how the Robot Chicken sketch played it!

I don't see the problem. Either you downplay the negative connotations, since not all drugs are bad/addictive (I have to take metformin since I was diagnosed as prediabetic for example), or you play up the drug angle and make it a story point, a hero having to battle addiction and weighing his own health against helping others and so forth. Sometimes controversy is a good thing, and a good take on it could make him more relevant.

Somebody already mentioned it earlier--midtier seems to be filled with mostly legacies due to focusing so much on the JL and giving feats to them, ie Garth, Donna, Cassie, Kaldur/Jackson vs Diana and Arthur.

Though it's funny I'd classify Sandy Hawkins Sandman as midtier when Wes himself was a street leveler, and he's the only legacy I can think getting significantly powerful than the predecessor..

Non legacy ones that come to mind that people haven't seem to mention (like Black Lightning) are Booster Gold, Stargirl, Geo Force, Mister Terrific, Red Tornado, Starfire, Jade (poor Jade, Obsidian got a significant powerup in Johns' JSA while she played second fiddle to him, Alan, and Kyle), some of LOSH like Imra, Vixen/Animal Man/Beast Boy, the Atoms (minus Pratt), Atom Smasher, etc. And Mera, forgot about her for a second.

To use a boxing analogy, when it comes to DC it seems you are either dealing with god tier (super heavy weight) characters, of street level (flyweight) characters. The characters who are some where in-between seem to be poorly developed heavy weights that are assumed to be middleweights because they job so much to the more popular heavy weights, or popular feather weights that are overwritten to seem to be way more powerful then they have any business being given their powerset. In the worse case scenario, this can lead to some very eye rolling story developments(Deathstroke somehow nailing a speedster in Identity Crisis) . DC seems to have an opening in their pantheon for some well written middleweight superheroes and villains. heroes that aren't mountain movers, but aren't peak human vigilantes either. They need a Spiderman or Wolverine level hero to really pop.
    I was fine with that.

    1) Deathstroke has dealt with the Titans (and Wally himself) for years. He wasn't some rookie coming out of nowhere.

    2) 'Normal' humans have given Flash (all of them) a trouble for decades. Every one of the Rogues should be no issue for a speedster... but somehow they always get one over on him with their mundane and superscience guns...

So yeah.... it may not make much sense for Flash to fall for that... but that can be said for 90% of Flash stories.

Biggest problem with DC is that they won't LET anyone be mid tier. The moment they get kind of cool... they have to boost their powers and do incredibily unheard of things to make them rival Superman. Hawkman should be mid tier at best. ELongated Man... Heck, most of the JLI crew would be pretty mid-tier. More powers tahn Batman, but still need a team to be effective.

Is Jade mid-tier though? She's done some impressive stuff prior to Flashpoint. Stopped a rampaging Power Girl who even Supergirl couldn't stop, (yeah, magic, but still), among other feats. Don't know myself if she is.
