The question being why are they there in the first place.

The answer being systemic racism and unchecked unlawful police brutality.

I notice even "conservatives" don't defend said behavior -- they just talk around it as if it isn't the key issue and the cause of said protests.

    Exactly.

They don't even want to acknowledge there's a problem.

What they want to do is shift the blame to black people ("rioters") and liberals ("antifa") -- many complain about Trump yet echo his lies.

While simultaneously downplaying video evidence of violent police officers and right-wing murders of federal officers as it doesn't fit their narrative.

Yes, cops are public servants who, when serving their duties competently, are gifted certain powers that regular civilians don’t enjoy.

But it’s wrong to think of it as “rights” in the sense of something that cannot be denied - it’s responsibilities.

And the thing about responsibilities is that they're a package deal of increased obligation and duty paired with power and privilege - a failure on one end of the package invalidates the rest of the package.

Or, to put it in other words, cops and police officers are to enforce a law they still operate under and are not above; they are given greater powers but also greater obligations, given more freedom of action but held to higher, more stringent standards alongside that freedom of action.

When an officer of the law fails at his responsibilities by maliciously abusing or even just incompetently and dangerously misusing his increased freedom of action, he has forfeited his protection from the law in his use of that freedom of action.

And in order for judgements about whether or not he’s forfeited his protection to be made, he must be subject to investigation, indictment, and trial.

Police unions and individual officers that have made the wrong choices here are treating mere investigation as a conviction. They are attempting to claim a privilege and power above the law. The more endemic and intertwined this inaccurate view of their station is, the more impetus there is to disband their current organizations and reform them entirely to reassert their subject-hood to the same rule of law they are to enforce.

Why did you put liberal protestors in quotes?
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Meanwhile, I'm sure Moscow Mitch and the rest of the GOP, well aware of what's gone down are already in "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" mode and will plead ignorance about Trump's threat when pressed by the media. It's a movie we've all seen before.
