Candidates have lied about not running for President with three years to go, especially if they've got a statewide race in between. Voters tend to prefer candidates focus on the office to which they've been elected.
Elizabeth Warren said she wouldn't run for President in 2018.

Marco Rubio said he wouldn't run for a second term as Senator if he lost the presidential primary.

If he wins reelection, he can run for President without any consequences.
If he loses the presidential primary or the General Election, he remains governor.
If he wins, the Lieutenant Governor takes over.
I would guess McConnell prefers DeSantis as President to Trump, although he may not believe it is wise to announce this.
If he loses reelection in a Republican-leaning state, that should rule him out as a presidential contender.
There may very well be different pressure in November 2022 if he wins reelection comfortably, which can happen given Florida's Republican lean, and the historical tendency of the party in the White House to do poorly in midterm elections.
Sincerely,
Thomas Mets
Skarlatos now looks like a case for WBE :PWASHINGTON (AP) — Alek Skarlatos, a hero soldier-turned-Republican congressional candidate, started a nonprofit shortly after his 2020 defeat in western Oregon, pledging to advocate for veterans “left high and dry” by the country "they put their lives on the line for."
The group, which Skarlatos seeded with $93,000 in leftover campaign funds, has done little since then to advance that cause.
What it has nurtured, though, are Skarlatos' political ambitions, providing $65,000, records show, to his 2022 bid for a rematch with longtime Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio in a district stretching from the college town of Corvallis to the Oregon shore. It's a seat that Republicans are targeting in their quest to win back the House.
Campaign finance laws prohibit candidates from self-dealing and from accepting illicit money from often opaque and less regulated world of political nonprofits. That includes a prohibition on candidates donating campaign cash to nonprofit groups they control, as well as a broader ban on accepting contributions from such groups, legal experts say.

There had always been suspicions that right wing scumbags helped foment violence during the 2020 riots, the goal being to put the blame on BLM. Hell, there had been reports of that very thing having happened here in Philly. This proves beyond any doubt those suspicions were right.

Sadly not nearly the entire country, or even half, is horrified. Mainly because those who know who he is outside of Florida and that region make up a pretty small percentage of the population, and even most of them know he's got an R- next to his name which usually results in them hating or loving him without knowing much more about him than he exists and maybe a couple of high profile news stories. Such is the case with most politicians who are not household names.
As to his running for the Presidency, I agree with Mets you can't trust what's said 3 years out. He (and everyone else, for or against) is holding his breath and waiting for Trump to figure out what he's going to do. I'd imagine he'd be more than happy to replace the almost certain to be jettisoned Mike Pence on a '24 ticket, and count on Trump supporting him for a run in '28. As to his causing deaths, you're acting as if Republican voters are going to accept facts that contradict their narrative. If they have to, they'll blame illegals or vaccines or say, "at least he fought for our freedoms and getting the economy opened up again". Reality is now optional.
Should we be horrified? Sure, but that's irrelevant to the situation. We should be deeply horrified that a carnival barker/grifter BSed and rabble-roused his way into the most important position arguably in the world, with the ability to project the most powerful military in the world wherever he wanted or fondle the levers of the world economy on a whim or a tweet, and came pretty close to doing it for another term and if he wants to run again it's maybe a fifty/fifty shot right now given Biden's lack of popularity, mishandling of situations, and near-zero in the help department from a VP who polled so low in the primaries she dropped out immediately. Not being Trump might not be enough next time, because people are stupid and forgetful and like to "shake things up" when they're not working, even when it seems unlikely the change is going to be a positive one.
Nope.
Amy Comey Barrett had caught Covid at some point before she was nominated for the Supreme Court.

It's not just about Trump, but the political environment in 2023.
If Trump is running but vulnerable, he'll likely have some opposition.
Chris Christie has said that he'll run regardless of whether Trump does, although his best showing was seven percent in New Hampshire.

A smaller field might end up being worse for a frontrunner. I don't think Bernie Sanders would have gotten half the vote in Iowa, or 60% in New Hampshire in 2016 if more Democrats had been willing to challenge Hillary Clinton.
A recent poll commissioned by John Bolton has DeSantis tied with Trump.

The final decisions to run for President will probably be made in 2023, and we don't know what the political environment will be. It could very well be that the Republicans will want someone new, and will blame Trump for allowing Biden to win.
A big question for DeSantis is how his response to Covid will be judged.
Florida's Covid cases fell recently.

The Delta wave was particularly harmful to southeastern states. How Florida is determined to do relative to the rest of the country depends on the what's going to happen in northern states as it gets colder and more people spend time together indoors.
Sincerely,
Thomas Mets
A poll form John Bolton? Can't get more unbiased than that. How about a poll from cats on why dogs are bad pets?
The Delta has surged in the Southeast because Republican Governors and their GOP voters have fought vaccinations, masks and social distancing. Full stop, end of story. This indoor-outdoor BS isn't going to cut it. Last January, Florida had more cases than NY.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
