Looking over election data from past presidential elections on Wikipedia, wondering who might have been president if ther was no Electoral College.

    1824
Popular Vote Winner - Andrew Jackson
Electorial College Winner - John Quincey Adams

    1876
Popular Vote Winner - Samuel Tilden (D)
Electoral College Winner - Rutherford B. Hayes (R)

    1888
Popular Vote Winner - Grover Cleveland (D)
Electoral College Winner - Benjamin Harrison (R)

    2000
Popular Vote Winner - Al Gore (D)
    Electoral College Winner - G.W. Bush (R)

    2016
Popular Vote Winner - Hillary Clinton (D)
Electoral College Winner - Donald Trump (R)

So it's pretty much as I thought. There are some elections that were really close, but only these were ones where the Electoral College went opposite to the popular vote.

Thats why Trump and the Gop do not want to get rid of The EC. It has always benefited them.

The Dallas City Council voted Wednesday to approve an annual budget that increased spending on its police department, but only after amending the spending plan to cut $7 million from the $24 million that would have been marked for overtime pay for police.

Much of the overtime cuts were reallocated for other purposes in the department, including more than $3.8 million to hire nearly 100 civilian workers. Other new spending will go toward addressing root causes of crime and improving street lighting.

The exact amount that the police budget went up was not immediately clear Wednesday night due to amendments made to the budget late in the council meeting. Dallas’ current police budget includes more than $500 million.

While Kleinman voted for the cut, he voted against the budget plan as a whole, citing a failure by the city to go far enough. Still, the council passed the general fund 9-6. Mayor Eric Johnson voted against the budget, calling the overtime cut "egregious."

"After finding other sources of revenue for pet projects in the budget, the majority of the City Council seemed intent on cutting the overtime budget for the mere sake of doing so, and not for the benefit of public safety," he said.

Earlier this morning Trump and Melania made an appearance at the Supreme Court to pay their "respects" to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They slink away when they see the reaction of the crowd.

Damn straight it has. And judging from how Biden's leading most polls, even running away with a few, Republicans know they'll likely need the EC yet again come November.

President Snowflake, a true profile in courage. I'm sure he'll whine on Twitter and/or Faux News like a five year denied cookies before dinner about how he had been mistreated later on, if he hasn't done so already.

So they shift money away from overtime for the actual cops, probably so they can buy more military grade weapons that they don't need. But of course, if overworked underpaid cops have those weapons, sooner or later they'll use them, and since white people are more likely to have political connections, they'll use the weapons against Black people.

On this date in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, as well as 2019, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published profiles of the U.S. House Representative from Texas’ 26th Congressional District, Mike Burgess, the U.S. House Representative from Texas’ 26th Congressional District whose claim to fame is discussing masturbating fetuses touching themselves in the womb for their own pleasure as part of his “pro-life” arguments before Congress. Burgess has also openly discussed the impeachment of Barack Obama (declining to comment WHAT the impeachable offense he committed was), going on FOX News to call for witch hunts into the attacks in Benghazi, among other tacky quotes and votes. Not surprisingly, he also bought into the Center for Medical Progress’ “sting” video and tried defunding Plannned Parenthood around this time a year ago.Going into the latest session of Congress, Mike Burgess was looking forward to trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and when asked about the millions of people who would lose their insurance coverage as a result, he laughed it off and was excited to do so because it would mean “more freedom”.

Ah yes. The freedom to die because you can’t afford your medical costs anymore. That’s something to strive for, Mike. Especially for someone who purports himself to be a “pro-life” physician. His voting record still shows us that Burgess is the same old frowny sack of nuts he’s always been, after winning re-election in 2018:

Michael Burgess is currently trending more towards the anti-immigrant demographic, not blinking while, he was shouted down and booed by constituents outraged over the Trump administration’s family separation policy, which he dug in and stated his support for. By April 2019, he showed he’s far enough gone that he’d even support the extreme idea to completely shut down the U.S./Mexico border so no one crosses it in either direction.

Texas has been trending more and more blue every year, but Texas’ 26th Congressional District still has a +11 Republican lean. His Democratic challenger in November is Carol Iannuzzi, a retired contracts negotiator looking to boot Michael Burgess from Congress, where he’s served since 2003, so he can spend more time at home contemplating wanking embryos.

We don’t care whatever he does, just as long as he’s not doing anything at the capitol.

It's weird to me that in the 1980s and 1990s, there were Fundamentalist groups in "Satanic Panic" mode claiming that RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons were leading people to join cults and literally go hunting for monsters.

Fast forward two decades, and the current state of the Republican Party is to imagine looming threats like "Antifa" or "BLM" are enemies of the state, and while not demonizing an actual ideology, inventing Satanic child molesting cults of Democrats to get 3% militia people to cosplay as the army and go hunting for. Except they're not there to panic about the lunatics they're creating.

I did a quick search and found this from 2010:

FBI: Mich. militia plotted to kill police

Nine suspects arrested by the FBI this weekend were part of a plot by members of a Christian militia group to kill police officers, according to federal authorities.
    And this from 2020:

Militia Leader Plotted to Kidnap and Kill Cops to Win New Followers, Feds Say

An aspiring militia leader plotted to kidnap or kill police officers to win over new recruits, and then steal their equipment to arm his budding anti-government revolt, the FBI said Tuesday.
Of course, now the Police, some of them, are chummy with these Militias.

Here is another interesting article to consider

Militias evaluate beliefs, action as president threatens soldiers in the streets

So-called “militias” and “patriot groups” have different beliefs and viewpoints, but most of these citizen-focused organizations share a concern about government infringement on individual liberties.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death while in police custody, citizens are protesting in American streets against police violence. Many protesters are facing off against well-armed officers and National Guard troops, with President Donald Trump threatening to send in federal troops.

That puts these groups in a curious position.

Their public activity has long championed the importance of individual constitutional rights, and they believe in the right to use armed resistance against government overreach.

But many of these groups’ members have also been supporters of the president, who is now speaking openly of taking the sort of far-reaching government action these groups have long warned against.

Dallas cops have ZERO issues using those weapons on white folks. Mainly those who love to get bold with cops.

At times here cooler heads have prevailed. I guess having a police chief from the community has helped although we don't have one now.

Exclusive: GOP Sen. Thom Tillis embraced QAnon conspiracy about COVID-19 death count in town hall

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., on Thursday told a virtual town hall audience that he believed the 200,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the U.S. had been inflated in order to "encourage people to use social distancing."

"When the final accounting is done," the actual COVID-19 death count will be lower, Tillis claimed.
The response echoes a false conspiracy theory pushed by adherents of the baseless QAnon movement: that public health officials are allegedly lying to the public about the true death count because of ulterior or possibly sinister motives. Only 6% of the reported deaths are attributable solely to COVID-19, conspiracy theorists claim.

Tillis also embraced an extreme anti-vaccine position and appeared to welcome herd immunity as part of a strategy to get 60% of the country immune. (Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said last month that a herd immunity strategy would lead to an "enormous" death rate that would be "totally unacceptable.")

The Republican incumbent told the caller that she was "absolutely right" in saying "the CDC has made clear" that deaths related to COVID-19 cover "things like heart attacks, and slip-and-falls and things like that" when people "have COVID in their system." The caller told Tillis she wanted "a more definitive, clear number."
