In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, as well as 2019, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published profiles of the U.S. House Representative from Alaska’s “At Large” Congressional District, Don Young whose photo above, we still assure you is not doctored in any way (he’s protesting the Obama administration calling for harnessing energy from wind turbines). Don Young is a twenty-two term Congressman, and we’ll save you the trouble of doing the math… he’s held office since 1973, meaning he was around during Watergate, and was actually congratulated on being elected to office at the White House by Richard Nixon.

Our first take on Rep. Young address his protestations of the use of green technologies to harness wind power (yes, he put that hat on willingly). This is a man who has blurted out words like “buttf***ing” in front of school children while paying them a visit (to say nothing of when he uses racial slurs like "wetback" and then defends it), and he remains, to this day, the only member of Congress to have ever brandished a walrus penis bone on the floor of the House or Senate (that’s not a metaphor, he swung an oosik at the head of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services) and. Young also assaulted a Congressional aide informed him he was trying to access a door where admittance was not allowed, and Young grabbed him by the wrist and twisted until he was allowed to pass... while on camera. He once took to the floor of the House when and complained about how gray wolves are a protected species, and then threw out the idea that the wolves should be turned loose on America's homeless population as a way to reduce their number.

In our second look at Don Young in 2015, we had to talk about how yet again he embarrassed himself while visiting a public school, where during a 45 minute question and answer session, when he as asked about what could be done to reduce suicide rates, he gave an answer that blamed it on the family and friends of the victims. In our 2016 update, we noted that Don Young had another brilliant idea while talking about the potential legalization of marijuana... instead we could lower the number of people being incarcerated for marijuana by suggesting capital punishment should be applied to all drug dealers. (That’s… a lot of executions, at least 90,000 in federal prison alone).

Don Young is still one of the worst Congressman when it comes to the environment, throwing a tantrum and arguing that not building a road through the middle of the Arctic Wildlife Refuge was “killing people, which not only makes zero sense, but then again, it’s against the advice of the Dept. of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, his old nemesis (at least he didn’t wield a walrus dong at them this time).

In February of 2018, he made the bizarre and insensitive argument about gun control that the Holocaust would not have been as bad if Jews had just been packing heat to defend themselves:
Don Young was re-elected yet again in 2018, this time with only 53% of the vote and still underperforming the +12 lean that his district is supposed to have, by far.

Don Young’s career now stretches 47 years, and bizarrely, he allegedly is still shoving people at the Capitol that he decides are standing in his way. The most recent incident was not a page, it's a journalist. Who is also a woman.

Well, Don Young is up for re-election in 2020 at the age of 87. He’s currently refusing to even consider the remote voting rules that have been established by House Democrats to protect members of the body “at risk” for Covid-19, (like y’know, him…) and has started just missing votes outright. He's also made light of the tens of thousands of deaths from Covid-19 by referring to the disease as “the beer virus while hosting campaign events where no one was wearing masks.

It bears watching if Don Young survives the 2020 primary here in about two weeks, and the general election to see if he gets a 25th term in office. But Alaska has trended away from Republicans more this year in polls than it has in decades, and it might just be time that voters opt to allow Young to go self-quarantine for his own safety, and not have the hassle of shoving people in the Capitol like a jackass.

Biden, at his most dangerous in terms of public perception, has that more personable and “earthy” demeanor that Trump tries to project... except it’s more genuine.

Call him a liar to his face. Say hes a racist to his face. Talk about how divisive and toxic he is. But, don't try to treat him as an equal and debate him on policy. Oh WBE, here's this guy to look at.

A state representative in Louisianna has protested against mask safety orders while wielding a chainsaw and comparing the measures to Nazi Germany in a video posted on social media.

In the advert, Louisiana Rep Danny McCormick tries to destroy masks with a blowtorch and a chainsaw and tramples a piece of paper with a stick.

Throughout the video, Rep McCormick speaks about his grievances of “mask mandates” stating that “masks aren’t bad, mandates are”.

The Republican argues that being ordered to wear a mask to help limit the spread of the virus is a restriction of his freedoms and that in doing so “the constitution is being shredded before our very eyes”.

He condemns the Shreveport executive order implemented by the city’s mayor that requires residents to wear masks in business establishments to protect the population against coronavirus infection.

To say nothing of the brain drain that it creates in congress. We already have a problem with lobbyist backed education of incoming congresspeople. You apply term limits to everyone and all you do is strengthen the unelected class of operators we can't get rid of.

Term limits are an actual *terrible* resolution to our problem.

    "We need term limits!"

    "We need to abolish parties!"
"... but the people with the most money will make all the decisions!"

"We need to ban special interest groups/lobbyists!"
"... but it will make the minority/majority too stong!"

"We need to elect people to the SCOTUS!"
"... but it will make the Court political!"

Oh, piss off. There are better reforms to our governmental system than don't get talked about. Repeal the permanent apportionment act of 1929, enlarge the House of Representatives. Term limits literally won't solve the problem everyone thinks they'll solve. A larger, more diverse congress *will* solve that problem, alongside refunding congress' access to bodies of expertise, but these solutions don't get serious consideration because they're not sexy like the common wisdom about term limits keeping people from becoming 'corrupt', even though it'd simply make the revolving lobbyist/congress door faster. People are, after all, going to need post-congressional careers.

    No need for insults.

Those are the base arguments, are they not?

I'd much rather see the EC get abolished, Puerto Rico becoming a state, national redistricting of congressional zones based on geography, redoing the House, and making the VP elected separately again than those those 4 arguments.

I agree with your House plan because it was something I wrote about a lot in college and in the first newspaper gig I had.

He ordered a statewide mask mandate although some sheriffs refused to enforce it.

In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, as well as 2019, that "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published profiles of the U.S. Senator from Utah, Mike Lee. Our quick take on Mike Lee is that every policy he doesn’t like (The Affordable Care Act, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Violence Against Women Act (!), child labor laws (!), FEMA, disaster relief (!), the Food and Drug Administration, the 14th Amendment, the 17th Amendment… etc.) he has the nasty habit declaring unconstitutional (which is the job of the Supreme Court, not a senator). Sen. Lee is also one of Sen. Ted Cruz’s few allies in the Senate and was one of the most recognizable faces seen during the 2013 Shutdown, including at the rally the weekend before it ended at the World War II memorial where a pastor demanded that President Obama “put down his Quran and come out with his hands up”, before Tea Party “patriots” started grabbing barricades to throw in front of the gates of the White House while some waved Confederate flags. Y’know… nice, healthy rhetoric worthy of the movement.

Our 2015 update on Mike Lee featured his joining the ranks of the #47 Traitors and signing his name onto a letter to the leaders of Iran meant to sabotage negotiations the Obama administration was having with Iran, his belief that the Supreme Court actually does not have the power to overturn same-sex marriage, and the fact that he submitted federal “religious freedom” law legislation to attempt to allow the legal discrimination of LGBT citizens based on someone’s “deeply held religious faith” (the bill went absolutely nowhere).

In 2016, Mike Lee defended his U.S. Senate seat against Misty Snow, the first transgender candidate for Senate in U.S. history, and in a state as red as Utah, he not surprisingly easily won re-election to a second term in office. He was confident enough that he would be victorious that he spent far more time helping his pal Ted Cruz campaign for president, and not just remaining on the fence about Donald Trump as a prospective nominee the whole time, but calling on him to step down as their nominee in October of 2016 (presumably so Ted Cruz could take his place as the nominee).

With the amount of revelations spinning out about Trump/Russia, Mike Lee could not keep his finger in the dyke forever. As of mid-July 2018, he was talking about how Donald Trump needed to “step down to salvage any kind of legacy. And that was BEFORE Trump’s humiliation by Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, but slightly after Trump passed over Mike Lee and his brother Thomas, a Utah Supreme Court Justice for the U.S. Supreme Court, and instead chose Brett Kavanaugh (likely because Kavanaugh thinks presidents should be above the law). He has continued to carry water for Trump regarding the Mueller investigation, complaining not only about Democrats reading it and wanting to protect future elections, but literally booking himself on The View to whine about it and claim he didn’t see evidence of a crime. Which is amazing because Mueller literally spells out ten different ways Trump committed obstruction of justice during the FBI’s investigation. It’s like he didn’t read the report, y’know?

Mike Lee has been further proof that the GOP can be their own worst enemies. Senate Republicans have been unable to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, even though they have a 52 seat majority. They’re stuck, though, because they have about three or four Senators with too much of a conscience, and a small cabal of complete ideological lunatics who aren’t satisfied with a partial repeal, they want socialized medicine completely burned to the ground, and salt poured on its ashes so nothing can ever grow there again. And Sen. Lee is one of that latter group.

Don’t think for a moment, though, that Mike Lee is coming to the center, because he’s also been openly discussing eliminating all public protected government lands as a policy of the United States, because apparently rejecting the Bears’ Ears Monument in Utah wasn’t enough for him.

Fast forward a couple months, though, and as an investigation was just beginning by the United States’ intellgience community into the Trump campaign and Russia potentially colluding to change the outcome of the American election, and Mike Lee was quick to declare that “I don’t see any evidence of anything happening here, so as a result, I think it’s time to move forward. It’s time to wrap this thing up and it’s time to move on.”

That was in January. With every revelation that has come, Mike Lee wanted to aid the coverup into what the investigation has shown has a LOT of evidence of potential treason. But hey, the Republicans won, so quick, nobody look…

Hell, he’s so patriotic that he would also be one of the two Senators to vote against

    • July 23rd, 2019: Sen. Lee votes against the Zadroga Act, to provide medical care for the 9-11 First Responders.
    • January 31st, 2020: Mike Lee votes against witnesses being allowed in the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, effectively making it a “trial”.
    • February 5th, 2020: Lee votes against the impeachment of Donald Trump, in spite of the mountain of evidence showing that he solicited foreign assistance in the 2020 elections.
    • February 25th, 2020: Lee co-sponsors and votes for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, an insane piece of anti-choice legislation that would ask abortion providers to try to admit aborted fetuses to a hospital if they were “alive” after the procedure, which is medically impossible given the age that abortions can be performed at.
    • July 2nd, 2020: Mike Lee begins a hyperbolic name-calling tantrum shortly after failing to push through a resolution condemning protests against police violence as “mob violence”, going on to say that Democrats were challenging him based on “bat guano-inspired insanity”, adding:
This is a statement that says mob violence is bad. Democrats can’t say mob violence is bad without simultaneously taking a jab at the president of the United States? You can’t really oppose this, it seems to me, without being on the side of the mobs, of mob violence, of mob mentality, of cruelty and intolerance and terror. I don’t think one can oppose this without being comfortable with those things. These violent protesters aren’t enlightened, edgy or hip. They’re frauds. They’re dimwitted, phony drama addicts.”

All we know for sure is… barring any unforeseen scandal or medical calamity, Mike Lee will remain a U.S. Senator until at least 2022. Hopefully he continues being as much of a thorn in his own party’s side because of his unflinching extremism, rather than be a complete pest and block any and all attempts at actual governance by either side of the aisle.
