Death of Black Kansas teen at juvenile jail ruled a homicide

A cause of death for the teen, Cedric Lofton, 17, was described as “complications of cardiopulmonary arrest sustained after physical struggle while restrained in the prone position,” according to the report, which was filed in Sedgwick County District Court and obtained by NBC affiliate KSN of Wichita.

Lofton died Sept. 26, two days after he was taken into custody on suspicion of battery against police officers in Wichita. As many as five employees were involved in restraining Lofton at a Sedgwick County juvenile detention facility, authorities have said.
Lawyers for Lofton’s family said in an email Monday that the autopsy confirms what they said video from inside the jail shows — that the officers "unjustifiably and with excessive and unreasonable force pinned Cedric to the ground, ultimately killing the unarmed, 135-pound, 17-year-old African American teenager."

Trump Adviser Peter Navarro Lays Out How He and Bannon Planned to Overturn Biden’s Electoral Win

“We spent a lot of time lining up over 100 congressmen, including some senators. It started out perfectly. At 1 p.m., Gosar and Cruz did exactly what was expected of them,” Navarro told The Daily Beast. “It was a perfect plan. And it all predicated on peace and calm on Capitol Hill. We didn’t even need any protestors, because we had over 100 congressmen committed to it.”

That commitment appeared as Congress was certifying the 2020 Electoral College votes reflecting that Joe Biden beat Trump. Sen. Cruz signed off on Gosar’s official objection to counting Arizona’s electoral ballots, an effort that was supported by dozens of other Trump loyalists.

This last-minute maneuvering never had any chance of actually decertifying the election results on its own, a point that Navarro quickly acknowledges. But their hope was to run the clock as long as possible to increase public pressure on then-Vice President Mike Pence to send the electoral votes back to six contested states, where Republican-led legislatures could try to overturn the results. And in their mind, ramping up pressure on Pence would require media coverage. While most respected news organizations refused to regurgitate unproven conspiracy theories about widespread election fraud, this plan hoped to force journalists to cover the allegations by creating a historic delay to the certification process.

Russian Court Orders Prominent Human Rights Group to Shut

MOSCOW — Russia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the liquidation of Memorial International, one of the nation’s oldest and most revered human rights organizations, which chronicled political repression and became a symbol of the country’s democratization that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The decision comes after a year of broad crackdown on opposition in Russia and more than three decades after Memorial was founded by a group of Soviet dissidents who believed that the country needed to reconcile with its traumatic past to move forward. In particular, the group dedicated itself to preserving the memory of the many thousands of Russians who died or were persecuted in forced labor camps during the Stalin era.
Shutting down Memorial is another step in President Vladimir V. Putin’s effort to rewrite some of the most painful chapters in Russia’s history and soften the image of an often brutal regime during the Soviet era.

Memorial’s closure represents “a new step downward,” said Ilya Miklashevsky, 65, whose father and grandfather were jailed in the gulag, the infamous labor camps where Russians were forced to toil in coldblooded conditions. “The country is sleepily moving downhill.”

Sergei Mitrokhin, a Russian opposition politician, said that Memorial was “the last barrier on the way to complete Stalinization of the society and state.”
Memorial International oversees the archive of victims of Soviet repressions. Its database contains more than three million names — only a quarter of all victims, according to the organization’s estimates.

In a separate hearing on Wednesday, the Moscow City Court will rule on whether to shut down Memorial’s Human Rights Center, which compiles a list of current political prisoners in Russia. The center is accused of “justifying terrorist activities” by including members of banned religious organizations on this list.

Russia's version of Critical Race Theory.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

The total number of troops is estimated to be about 104,000.

When googling "Ukraine troop withdrawal" I also got a story from April. This has happened before.

The end of the cold war came during the Bush administration, so credit that Reagan got for that came a bit late for his political career.

But there are multiple reasons for the media not to spike the football.

If Russia is backing down, the timing between Christmas and New Years is telling. This is pretty much the equivalent of a Friday Evening news dump, a big story at a time when most reporters are doing other stuff.

Putin lies. Media figures are aware it would look bad to give Biden credit for ending the crisis, when it's likely that Putin will still do something aggressive around Ukraine in the near future.

There could also be a legitimate concern given Putin's ego that to publicly give Biden credit for making Putin blink, you might increase the chances he'll do something new and aggressive to save face.

    That's a stretch.

I think it's better to generally respond to the best arguments of the other side (with the caveat that if someone prominent says something stupid, it can be noteworthy.) Otherwise Xheight can ignore anything intelligent said on this thread, and talk about what the nuttiest liberal he could find on the internet has said.

10,000 troops out of over a hundred thousand. it is a small percentage. It is not a with draw. It is Putin doing the I can be reasonable bit drop some sanctions and in about 6 months we will be doing this all over again.

The only good this is it did not escalate but this is not a victory when there are still 90 grand or so troops on the boarder. I am not giving anyone credit on this because I doubt very much Putin ever intended to invade at least right now. kind of a gage world reaction see what the fall out to the build up is. If he with draws more ill be happy but these 10 thousand will be back in a half a year tops i think. Not even that long. Create a crisis around the American Midterms to Make Biden and his party look weak.

It's a start. Putin knows that the cost of action is too high, as is the possibility that he might lose.

Gunman kills four, injures three in shooting spree that spanned Denver, ended in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A gunman killed four people and injured three others, including a police officer, in a shooting spree that spanned across Denver and ended in Lakewood Monday night, police say.

The spree started a little after 5 p.m. at First Avenue and Broadway, Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen said in a joint press conference with the Lakewood Police Department.
A short time later, officers were dispatched to a second shooting at 12th Avenue and Williams Street, where one man was killed.

Chief Pazen said officers were then dispatched to a third incident, located at W. 6th Avenue and Cherokee Street.

According to Chief Pazen, a gun was fired but no one was injured.

Around 8th Avenue and Zuni Street, officers identified the vehicle associated with the three shootings.

Chief Pazen said a pursuit ensued, and there was an exchange of gunfire. No officers were injured during this shooting.

The suspect disabled the police vehicle and fled into Lakewood, according to Chief Pazen.

Just before 6 p.m., Lakewood police received a call about a shooting at a business in the 1500 block of Kipling, according to John Romero, public information officer with the Lakewood Police Department. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The LAPD has released bodycam footage of the imbeciles who opened fire on a suspect in a crowded Burlington Coat Factory, resulting in the death of a 14 year old girl who was trying on clothes in a dressing room with her mother.

These idiots looked less like police, and more like the National Guard that was in First Blood- the dopey weekend warriors who really don't know what they are doing, but like to pretend that they do. The cop with the rifle had to push his way to the front to take point, the suspect was at the far end of the isle, away from the original victim. Everything about this video screams that heads need to roll, but I doubt they will because the Police Union will close ranks and protect the officers.

I'll talk about how reasonable Putin is when there's a free and fair election in Russia where Putin's opponent has a legitimate chance of winning.

Anyone interested can take a look at what I wrote at the time.

I can completely understand that people who don't think global warming is that serious an issue wouldn't consider the deal.

It is worth noting that it's possible Republicans will get what would have been their preferred outcome in a grand bargain anyway as the Supreme Court is likely to rule that Roe VS Wade was unconstitutional at some point in the next few months.
