The Virginia GOP is definitely wanting to lose more elections.

    https://richmond.com/news/state-and-...ome-the-latest

After months of disagreement, the Virginia Republican Party’s governing body agreed Tuesday night on a method to nominate statewide candidates for the November election. They’ll hold a drive-up convention May 8 on the campus of Liberty University.

The decision followed feuds among members of the party’s State Central Committee, who had opted for a convention to nominate candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. But such a gathering would be illegal under Virginia’s COVID-19 rules.

And all this time I was thinking: "Okay, maybe the hearings on the riot wrapped up for the day. But there were still several confirmation hearings, two which I believe got contentious. You would think a major news organization would care more about that than, say, an old golfer who crashed his car.
Not just "...an old golfer." Tiger Woods is quite possibly the greatest golfer of all time. I mean, I'm no big fan of golf, but let's be honest. Woods is basically the Michael Jordan of golf.

I'd like to say "maybe it was a slow news day and we're just not used to them".

It wasn't a slow news day. Senate confirmation hearings on Cabinet secretaries, the Covid-19 numbers encouragingly IMPROVING, and Texas still recovering from a blizzard that's causing gas prices to go up around the country now...

But "Tiger Woods is great golfer but s*** driver" is the four hour focus of cable news. SMDH.

What we were watching was news groups hoping there would be a "breaking news!" update to report the cops confirmed he was under the influence somehow. They were dragging it out and waiting for more scandalous details.

Which is f***ed up, but "f***ed up" is the default setting of cable news journalism.

I agree. Woods is a great golfer, but his driving skills leave a lot to be desired as I think that was his third major accident, one of which was while he was fleeing a pissed off wife who found out he was cheating on her and tried to tee off on his noggin with a golf club. The coverage was all over the place yesterday, but MSNBC had no business doing that when you had ESPN and Golf Channel on the story like white on rice. Look, I'm glad Woods wasn't killed, but, like WBE said, there were other, more important stories that demanded the country's attention yesterday.

On this date in 2015, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" ran a profile of Dan Lungren, the former U.S. House Representative from California’s 3rd District. Lungren had co-sponsored anti-abortion legislation to specify it should only apply to “forcible rape”, meaning he there would be no exceptions for incest or statutory sexual assaults. He also was an adamant denier of climate change, in California, no less. He also had a key staffer convicted of a fraudulent voting drive scheme (after campaigning for Voter ID laws). By the end of his career, he managed to be booed at a town hall for still wanting a return to the Bush tax cuts for the rich. After Lungren lost in the 2012 elections, he apparently decided to call it a career.

In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, as well as in 2020, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published its profiles Bill Chumley, a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives who has served in that body to since coming to power in 2010, the Tea Party year. He has managed to stay in office through the benefit of not being challenged, at all, in 2012 or 2014 in a primary or general election. Bill Chumley is one of the contingent of South Carolina Republicans who in the wake of the shooting at the AME Emanuel Church in June of 2015 by a shooter motivated by Confederate iconography and white nationalist views that fought tooth and nail to try and keep the Confederate Flag flying at the state capitol. Hell, Chumley’s legislative profile on the website of the South Carolina legislature lists him as a proud member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, so maybe that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. What sets Bill Chumley apart from the rest of his colleagues is how on June 23rd, 2015, among all the prayers for the victims and talk to remove the flag, he desperately tried to steer the conversation away from his beloved Stars & Bars, and tried to spin the issue into a debate on gun control by blaming the victims for not being armed in church or fighting back, chuckling about their deaths in a CNN interview about how they were “waiting their turn to be shot”. As disgusting as a moment as that is, it’s not an isolated incident of outrageous behavior from State Senator Chumley. Like say, back in December of 2012 when he sponsored legislation in the South Carolina legislature that would jail state and federal officials who tried to implement the Affordable Care Act in South Carolina, specifically referring to this measure as an attempt at nullification, and as one of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, it’s a pretty safe bet that the history of South Carolina trying to nullify federal laws, like say at Ft. Sumter, was not lost on the Chumster. A few months after that in March of 2013, he suggested South Carolina return to having low-level inmates return to being indentured labor for the state in chain gangs. Yes, CHAIN GANGS. And even as recently as February of 2015, Chumley brought stunningly stupid legislation to the floor, when he was overcome by Islamophobia and submitted one of those bills that would put an unnecessary ban on Sharia Law in South Carolina. He’s still working on nullification bills, including one he filed in December of 2015 (just in time for Christmas!) to try and nullify the Supreme Court’s Obergefell vs. Hodges decision, and outlaw same sex marriage in South Carolina. We’d say he’s willing to fight a Civil War to prevent gays from being married, but it actually looks more like Bill Chumley just wants to fight a Civil War, period, over whatever issue is convenient to get it done.

And, about that whole Civil War thing… in late 2017, Chumley actually co-sponsored a bill in the South Carolina legislature to honor “black Confederate veterans”, presumably in an effort to prove that Confederate monuments aren’t racist. There’s just one problem with that… historical records can find not a single black soldier who served in the Confederacy (go figure, the Confederate racists hoping to defend an empire built on slavery didn’t trust any of their slaves with guns in combat to fight for the right to stay enslaved). Upon hearing that fact, Chumley denied reality. still didn’t withdraw his bill, and said:

That bill, of course, is going nowhere. Sadly, a bill he voted for that might be was when he voted for a bill to prevent abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected, or in other words, as early as six weeks, before many women even realize they are pregnant. Regrettably, Bill Chumley was elected to a sixth term in 2020. He immediately began furthering his "pro-life agenda" by sponsoring legislation to try and prevent state workplaces from creating or enforcing any form of mask mandates, as the Covid-19 pandemic raged out of control and both the infection rate and death rates soared. He literally doesn’t care if people live or die, and yet they keep re-electing him in his district by a 2-1 margin.

We’re going to pause from writing profiles to go and drink until the pain stops.

If Trump is found guilty in New York does it make him ineligible to run in 2024?

The Constitution does not, in fact, prohibit this. Because what electorate would be stupid enough to elect a convicted felon?

    Oh, right. This one.

The minute he's convicted, someone should draft an amendment to bar convicted felons from running for president. If you can't vote, why should you be able to run from prison?

It would be interesting to see if there are 17 Republicans willing to vote on this amendment, of if they're that cultish in Trump worship to stand by him after a conviction in court.

Woods' crash is worth a few minutes, but not the total focus to that degree.

Well, Tiger isn't really that much of an "old golfer". He turned 45 back in December. And he's one of the leading, most well-know (still) living golfers around these days.

But, yeah, coverage of this was probably over-blown. Unfortunately, that's the state of the media these days: if you cut away for a moment when something BIG is revealed, and one of your media rivals happened to be still covering the story live at that moment, your network won't look so good and won't have as many viewers once you do jump back to the story that your coverage is coming late to.

Damned if you do / damned if you don't.

And while the cable networks wait for something to happen, they bring in one "expert" after another to speculate on what might happen. It's what one comedian several years ago refrerred to as "The What If? News."

Early reports out of NYSAG are Trump netted between $1.1 and $1.6 BILLION from 2017-2019, and attempted to deffer all taxes to offshore assets.

    Not at all.

People were dumb as hell to take him seriously as a candidate in 2015/2016. He's always been a villain. Blows my mind that so many people turned out and voted for him in 2020. Feels like a whole quarter of the country have lost their damn minds.

No wonder the IRS has been interested in him and why he wanted to stay POTUS so badly.

That's a lot of taxes he owes ...
