He's probably waiting for a day when Trump's screw ups don't push it out of the headlines

When the election comes, no one is going to care if Biden announced a running mate on August 1st or August 14th. They might care if he makes a choice too early, and missed something big in the vetting.

trump finally does something good. He's extending the CAREs Act payment of $600 to $400 a week. I'm sure Nov 3, 2020 had nothing to do with this decision...

I'm not sure he has the athority to do that. Finace and budget is Congress' job.

It would be foolish to draw media attention away from Trump right now. The very preventable COVID death toll continues to rise and he seems to say something vile everyday. Biden really hasn’t had to do much to gain a large lead in the polls.

The situation was Karen Bass shows how important it is to properly vet a VP candidate. So taking more time to make a decision is the way to go. Wait until right before the convention and hopefully keep the momentum going.

One of the talking heads on TV made a good point. Biden doesn't want to distract from the terrible job Trump is doing right now, and if he were to announce a running mate, Trump could start launching attacks to distract.

That's great- and possibly illegal. It also makes me wonder if one of those 'fiscal conservative' Republicans who keep saying we can't extend those benefits anymore or provide any more relief money because they suddenly care about the deficit will try to sue to block Trump, or start raising hell in the House or Senate over it. Best thing the Democrats can do is sit back and watch them implode.

A cynic would say Republicans intentionally stonewalled the bill so Trump could look like a hero to the rubes by riding to the rescue like he had today. Chicanery aside however, the GOP’s all too genuine reluctance to agree to the original $600 a week stipend had been a major sticking point in getting that bill passed. Trump giving up on the payroll tax cut was a surprise though, given that was a poison pill both sides disliked, perhaps he had no choice on that score.

I'm guessing it's more about vetting than taking attention away.

A veep candidate allows for a new high-profile surrogate to talk about Trump's shortcomings.

If that's what he's waiting for, he'll never pick a VP nominee.

He can always wait for Trump to start getting a little good press from the non Reich-wing media. Steal his thunder and trigger the yellow snowflake.

True, but it also gives Trump someone new to attack. Right now he's being kept on defense.

I heard the surely under-reported death tally is now expected to be above 200,000, estimate which already sounded terrible months ago.

Since more "respectable" American milestones like 9/11 and Vietnam are safely past, what's next? Comparing America to some common "shithole" country doing X population cleansing, on purpose, or due to incompetence, or both?

trump's also trying to take credit for insurances dropping the pre existence condition.

Over the next two weeks I’ll be pursuing a major executive order requiring health insurance companies to cover all preexisting conditions for all companies. That’s a big thing. I’ve always been very strongly in favor. We have to cover pre-existing conditions.

It does depend on who Biden picks.

Duckworth (who lost limbs in war) and Bass (whose only daughter died in a car accident) would be poor choices to attack personally.

With other candidates, it doesn't seem there's a big difference with one or two more weeks to mention controversies.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets
