God damn. I remember putting on a play for the Diary of Anne Frank in middle school. I can't imagine how you could teach modern history without a WW2 deep dive.

You kinda don't, even at the time it was pretty clear that it was just the bare minimum curriculum. Government was even worse, which was just a 1 single semester class in high school, which now that I think of it I totally get how people fall for the "deep state" conspiracy theories that the alt right loves so much when they have essentially no of how the US government even works. The Florida educational system is pretty bottom of the barrel in a country that already has an education problem.

Remember what is in those textbooks has to go through 2 sets of folks.

One at the state level-who approves books to be used in schools.

Two the school board level-who approves which books are to be used in school.

Generally it's one main publisher when it comes to certain subjects. However you can see more than one in other cases.



Now for middle school-yeah it's possible to glance over WW2.

Because middle school history (at least in Texas) only cover US and whatever state you lived in history.

Diary of Anne Frank would be more under English and probably a supplemental topic in history.

Now high school different story-you are going to talk about WW2 because those state tests are going to bring it up.

WW2 was kind of the cut off point to for the most modern stuff we covered, maybe some very very condensed civil rights movement and Vietnam stuff at the end but absolutely nothing on anything past that(graduated in 2009 for reference).

Pretty much. Once you get past WW2-it's DOWN HILL and bits and pieces for everything else.


And most history books are update probably every 4-5 years. We just had one where folks were trying to remove Hilary Clinton and Helen Keller from the textbooks. Others were trying to remove or keep Obama out of text books.

Trump-depending on where you live you might not see him fully in a textbook until 2023.

They taught us about the Holocaust when I was in high school during the 90s, even had a survivor speak to us. They barely touched the Japanese American camps though, except an English teacher who had us read a memoir.

I had a history teacher who was in the camps, so we learned about them. She also let us know that most classes wouldn't hear much, if anything, about them. It was a very unique experience, hearing the first hand stories. I will always be grateful to her for exposing us to one of America's most overlooked dark periods, and for being willing to relive that experience for our benefit.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted Wednesday that most of the American public will not have access to a vaccine against the novel coronavirus until late spring or summer of next year.

At a Senate hearing on the government’s response to the pandemic, CDC director Robert Redfield adhered to President Trump’s oft-stated desire for a safe and effective vaccine to become available in November or December — perhaps just before the presidential election seven weeks away.

But Redfield said the vaccine will be provided first to people most vulnerable to covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, and supplies will increase over time, so Americans who are lower priority for the protection will be offered the shot more gradually. For it to be “fully available to the American public, so we begin to take advantage of vaccine to get back to our regular life,” he said, “I think we are probably looking at late second quarter, third quarter 2021.”

It was the same for me, in New York City at the turn of the century. The covered the Holocaust, but not much about the Japanese-American internment.

I suspect we learned so much about the holocaust because New York City has a large Jewish population.

The curriculum for the middle school I teach at does have books about both the Holocaust and Japanese-American internment. And Vietnam.

In highschool down here WWII and the Holocaust were touched upon in class but as with many topics we got the basics. Also as with a lot of things independent research helps. I learned about subjects like Unit 731, Operation Paperclip, and Wernher von Braun's involvement in NASA purely through curiosity.

1 in 3 adults think the U.S. should keep current nuclear plants online but not build any new facilities. 16% believe the U.S. should keep existing nuclear plants operational and build new reactors. This comes to under half of Americans who don't think we currently have too much nuclear power.

29% view nuclear energy favorably and 49% view it unfavorably, although there is a significant percentage with no opinion.

There are all sorts of regulations that make controlled burns difficult to implement.

Well you have to be pragamatic, if your only feasible options are a coal fired power plant, or a Nuclear power plant than I'd go fossil fuel everytime.

Nuclear power plants require large amounts of radioactive waste to be stored, they are an armageddon nightmare when they go into meltdown (Chernobyl/Fukushima Daiichi) not to mention a jihad terrorist's wet dream. I don't believe conservatives are being sincere when they advocate for nuclear power.

There are nutjobs on the far left that use global warming as a stick to say capitalism is incompatible with civilization (I had to live with one at one point)
There are nutjobs on the right (Including Donald Trump) who deny science, and think that man made global warming is a hoax.

Renewable energy has become a non partisan issue that has moved beyond them. It is now a hotbed for capitalists and entrepreneurial growth, whether it be a source for electricity or powering automobiles.

The United States is behind the 8 ball on this because the current President doesn't believe in global warming and supporting initiatives to support renewables, he's a caveman stuck in the past.
