This is a fair point on some controversies.

People do want some level of predictability, and controversial policies can be ingrained once people are dependent on them or of the possibility. For example, there would be a lot of pushback if Roe VS Wade were reversed because of the uncertainty.

This can also go in the other direction. The Biden, Harris or 48th President's administration will probably institute some policies that change the status quo, and cause confusion in the other direction.

The question was more about distance from the middle, rather than which direction.

    There is some speculation.

    I do hope not.

Trump has a massive ego, so he might try to pull it off, especially since it would be in the interests of his legacy to do so. A guy who wins a second term, even under unusual circumstances, has a better legacy than someone who is a one-termer. He could spend the next few years arguing that he was hindered by unfair impeachment hearings, a pandemic, and the bad luck to get sick close to the election. He'll blame Biden for any difficult choices, and take the credit for any vaccine, claiming it's the result of policies that he had advocated for, like Operation Warp Speed.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/12/h...-optimism.html

Jeet Heer noted that he could also claim that any investigation into wrongdoing during his presidency, or in his business career prior to his presidency, is politically motivated.

    https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1264695029055909888

He may toy with the idea of running for President and not do it, especially if Republicans take back control of Congress in the 2022 midterms.

We'll know in a few weeks what his options are. If he loses key swing states narrowly, he'll be better positioned than if he loses in the biggest blowout in generations.

By the way, it feels weird but satisfying to write that we'll know the outcome of the next election within the next three weeks. It's not mentioned enough. The election ends in 16 days (even if it may take a while for all the vote totals to come in.)
    Sincerely,

‘My people fought for the right to vote’: With a surge of emotion, Black Americans rush to the polls

A 72-year-old voter in Dayton, Ohio, said, “I’m angry about everything.” A retired veterinary technician in Detroit said she voted for one reason only: “Donald Trump. To make sure he’s not reelected.” A federal employee who waited in line for 10 hours in suburban Atlanta explained simply: “I have three Black sons.”

Two weeks before Election Day, Black Americans have voted in striking numbers, helping to drive historic levels of early voting as mail ballots have flooded election offices and people have endured huge lines to cast ballots in person across the country.

In interviews in 10 states where early voting is underway, Black voters said this year’s presidential election is the most important of their lifetime — some calling it more consequential even than 2008, when those who were old enough went to the polls in record numbers to make Barack Obama the country’s first Black president.
People still talking about Hunter Biden up in here while we waiting in line for 10 hours trying to vote and save the country.

Trump's irresponsible behavior knows no bounds, it's truly disgusting and reprehensible.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-u...-idUSKBN2730LU

After Whitmer had to deal with thugs storming the state house with guns & balaclava's to protest lockdown measures, and after nearly being kidnapped by far right militia men who had fried their brains on deep state conspiracy theories.

Trump rolls into Michigan, and encourages lock her up chants to the right wing militia faithful, ignoring the fact that the FBI just foiled a major terrorist attack in the state.

Trump is a fruit loop, who panders to the extreme fringes of the political spectrum, he does not deserve be in power, and I do not want his finger anywhere near the shiny red button. The sooner he is given the boot the better.

I understand that Joe Biden wasn't the first choice for many of the people here, but what do you guys think of his general election campaign? Is he exceeding expectations from when it became clear he would be the nominee? Do you think he's the right man for the moment? Or, is your view more like "Eh, he's fine?"
    Sincerely,

The guy has come out on the right side of things and stood in front of a group about to vote on law sounding like Tucker Carlson while he talks about minority Americans.

Never mind the time when he looked a whole lot like a politician who was in someone's pocket. Or was treading water on getting card check into law.

What, exactly, are these "Expectations..." that I was supposed to have?

I legit think he'll be a good President. In retrospect I think the Dems should have run him in 2016 instead of Hillary...on the other hand I don't think Biden would have defeated Hillary in a Primary, and Biden being a good loyal party man and stepping aside in 2016 and politics altogether the last 4 years and now stepping back in has done well for him optically speaking.

Biden's victory would transform the Democrats into the Party of Obama and eliminate the vestiges of Clintonism. On that level he's a progressive candidate. Obama would be the guy who put his VP over to the WH, something that Bill failed to do with Gore, and then again with Hillary. So it consolidates the political legacy of the most progressive President since Lyndon B. Johnson, and that's not inconsiderable. Biden knows for a fact that the major reason people are voting for him is that they see in him, rightly or wrongly, the nearest thing to Obama's third term. He's running on the most progressive platform in the Dems' history. Will there be disappointments to come, sure, but I am pretty sure POTUS Bernie would have disappointed people too, not entirely through fault of his own.

In a very generic sense, I don't fault him for the basic notion of approaching a sitting president about a black-empowerment policy/policies proposal, but especially at this point, it would seem to be obvious to most people that characters like Mr. 45 and his lieutenants (Mr. Kushner, Mr. Mnuchin, etc.) are simply not honest brokers, no matter how well-meaning you may be.
Even though Ice Cube has since clarified that he did not endorse Trump (nor Biden), the tweet by Katrina Pierson helped to give cover to the racially bigoted cohorts who are voting for Trump (and the self-described social moderates) to observe this from afar and conclude that Trump is not as racist as his detractors tend to say. Additionally, it takes advantage of the historical cynicism of cohorts of American Black Men in particular, where the tendency is to equivocate white politicians on both major parties to be racist or neo-racist, so voting is considered a fool's errand. Especially in the post-hip-hop era, you have people who grew up with continued urban underemployment, the expanded police harassment/drug arrests era, and so the cynicism is hardened even further.

Entrenched cultural entitlements and casual racial supremacy views are at the core of this. People can rationalize all they want about why they voted for Trump: (economic anxieties, non-traditional politician demeanor, non-"insider')- despite his atrocious lack of formal credentials, policy experience or even a professional demeanor, he became the darling of Make America Great ("for wh_te people") Again. Clearly his most ardent supporters are either capable of compartmentalizing to an obscene degree, at minimum, or are just plain dim-witted and defiantly ignorant. They have no connection to empathy for vulnerable populations. They still hold on to the tacit racial promise of being morally superior to anyone who is not white and protestant Christian (of course, there are some "alt-right" Catholics out there, too, e.g, Rudy Giuliani, Rick Santorum). It doesn't matter whether they openly, consciously identify with the KKK and Nazis or not. Most don't. However, the antediluvian social attitudes and conclusions persist. This has filtered into the results of any number of elections at all levels, not just the President, unfortunately...
    Exactly this.

It was something that Stormfront said in “The Boys”. She said people don’t like being called Nazis but they like what she’s saying. It’s the same with a number of Trump supporters and how the GOP as a whole has moved.

The thing with Ice Cube is black celebrities and a lot of young black men need to start reading up on just how poisonous Trump’s Presidency has been to minorities from education to economic policy. They need to understand just how much the GOP has made policies that deliberately hurt minorities and prevent attempts at wealth advancement. At the moment, there does to be a chasm opening up between the political views of black men and women which frankly for me is coming from a place of ignorance. As a black person myself, it’s telling just how decisive black women are and just how politically active they’ve been in the last few decades while some black men are still playing the “both sides argument” (which has been fueled by deliberate misinformation dissemination in the last few years).

The Republican Party today isn’t the party of Bush 1.0 anymore, it’s turned into something much uglier. There are a number of cranks, lunatics and flat out racists in the GOP today and they are running for elections on their platform. This is one of the most problematic things I’ve seen because some of these guys have built their entire philosophy on stuff that isn’t real. And looking ahead it’s only going to get worse because most of the “young and upcoming” GOP members are “camp Trump” and are simply repeating far right talking points.

That’s why it’s very confusing that some minorities vote Trump and the GOP as a whole. You can’t be supporting people that openly don’t give a **** about you or your concerns.

I don't think it's a case that a crisis inherently favors one kind of politics more than another.

In Germany, Merkel's CDU moderate conservative approach (smaller cases are deliberate) have made her and her legacy concrete for a generation or so, making it harder for a more left-wing political program to find favor there. Granted Social Democrat policies of earlier admins have been embraced and remain in place.
Because the primary narrative on AIDS under the Reagan administration was that it was a punishment from God on 'filthy queers', and since it only affected Hell-bound perverts and disgusting f*****s, who cares where it came from or how to stop it? We'll all just ignore the gay cancer while it takes care of a problem for us, and then when it's over, everyone will be better off...

Add to THAT horrorshow reality the OTHER reality where anyone who treated gay people with compassion over that illness was demonized and/or ridiculed as a satanist or a 'f**-lover' or a >GASP!!< COMMIE by 'good', church-going voters.

At least until the Ryan White case proved that even innocent straight kids could get it, and that maybe something should be done about it?

So they banned gay men from donating blood...

The Republican Party's long, proud track record of complete lack of compassion and bowing to 'Christian' extremist hypocrisy has been well known for a LONG time. As has the Democratic Party's overall spinelessness against far right corruption, due to their terror at the idea of not being seen as 'Christian' enough to get votes. In a nation where public shows of religious fealty and false piousness get you ALL the votes, and scandals barely matter if you say 'God has forgiven me, why cant you?', where we dont DARE criticize anyone's religious beliefs, no matter how monstrous or harmful they may be, Democrats couldn't take a properly strong stance (due in no small stance to the unified 'moral' resistance to any funding for HIV/AIDS research and support from the Republicans of the day) until Reagan was basically out (of his mind, if not out of power).

I don't really think Biden has to do much, he just has to step aside and watch Trump self destruct.

Most 1 term Presidents lose either because they lost the center of the political spectrum, or a significant amount of their party's supporters, Trump has managed to do both.

The real test for the Democrats will come in 2024, assuming that Biden steps down.
