Tami's got it. It's functional method is that it is a vasoconstrictor. I only learned that one when looking it up for that post, but apparently about 20% of vets from those wars swore off hats, and I bet that skews heavily towards draftees. I probably should have chosen my words better, as "largely" makes it sound more like a majority rather than a significant minority.

I had a fedora myself, purchased from the after the ride shop at Disneyland's Indiana Jones ride. Ah, back in the days when the latest Indy film was good and Temple of Doom was considered the worst film in the series.

They also found out that it could help women with period cramps, but said, who cares.
