It's still incredibly dangerous. In 1928, nazis were more or less that when they attempted their coup and failed. Five years later they had the most votes out of the election (but not the majority). In the US political system, where it's almost a given Biden will not be able to suppress the far-right, which thus knows it is strong enough to elect someone like Trump, it's incredibly dangerous. Yes, if anything, the biggest lesson is that this can happen and it can happen here, not just in faraway places or long ago times. I think the only reason it did not happen this time was that they could see it would never stand and would destroy them. If McConnell and some others had seriously thought it could work, they would have done it.

And yeah, I think this is going to split their party into the Trumpets who care about nothing but getting votes from idiots because there's a lot of idiots and the not much better Republicans who probably have a little more capacity to look at the long term in terms of votes.

Yeah. On the one hand, the primary point of this stunt may not have been to express displeasure over those with superficial differences in complexion. On the other, IF that be the case, the onus was still on the “O.G.” participants not to let the extreme/racist elements leak into their ranks and “poison the well”, so to speak. And, just for good measure, best to excise the uglier crowd quickly and loudly enough for all to see, so that that the “movement” doesn’t get smeared across various media outlets.

But they apparently missed that mark (which, again, under the current circumstances would be putting it somewhat generously)
