I thought you were suggesting that Democrats should claim that Greene and Gaetz are typical Republicans. That's the type of thing that would piss off retiring Republican Senators, or moderate members of Congress.

Noting the stupidity of Gaetz and Greene is a different issue. Too many people would agree for that to have political salience.

It could also limit the ability of Democrats to go after Gaetz or Greene in a situation where it may be relevant (IE- looking at whether the Republican nominee for Senate in Georgia is connected to Greene.)

Pandemic Aid Programs Spur a Record Drop in Poverty

WASHINGTON — The huge increase in government aid prompted by the coronavirus pandemic will cut poverty nearly in half this year from prepandemic levels and push the share of Americans in poverty to the lowest level on record, according to the most comprehensive analysis yet of a vast but temporary expansion of the safety net.

The number of poor Americans is expected to fall by nearly 20 million from 2018 levels, a decline of almost 45 percent. The country has never cut poverty so much in such a short period of time, and the development is especially notable since it defies economic headwinds — the economy has nearly seven million fewer jobs than it did before the pandemic.
The extraordinary reduction in poverty has come at extraordinary cost, with annual spending on major programs projected to rise fourfold to more than $1 trillion. Yet without further expensive new measures, millions of families may find the escape from poverty brief. The three programs that cut poverty most — stimulus checks, increased food stamps and expanded unemployment insurance — have ended or are scheduled to soon revert to their prepandemic size.

While poverty has fallen most among children, its retreat is remarkably broad: It has dropped among Americans who are white, Black, Latino and Asian, and among Americans of every age group and residents of every state.

    Senate Advances Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

Hours after bipartisan Senate negotiators reached a deal on an infrastructure package, the chamber voted to advance it, setting in motion a final vote on the bill in the coming days.

The procedural motion was approved 67-32, with 17 Republicans joining all Democrats to begin legislative action. The top Senate GOP leader, Kentucky's Mitch McConnell, was among those voting to move ahead with the proposal.

Earlier on Wednesday GOP Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio told reporters the group reached agreement on the major issues and was still working on legislative text. "We are prepared to move forward," Portman said after the Republicans working on the deal met with McConnell.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who was leading talks for the 10 Democrats at the negotiating table, told reporters on Capitol Hill that "we are very excited to have a deal" and said that she had spoken with President Biden about it. Biden later told reporters he was "feeling confident" about the bill.

    I'm waiting for the SWERVE.
I suspect Moscow Mitch is concerned because the low vaccination/high infection rates are mainly in red states, and he fears the Qpublican base could literally die off before the midterms.

Interesting development in a Texas special election... We'll recall that GOP Congressman Ron Wright died of Covid-19. His widow, Susan Wright, was running to replace him against Jake Ellzey, and she had Trump's endorsement.

Even with a supposed Trump Bump, she lost
    .

Maybe we shouldn't read too much into this being an indicator that Trump's influence is waning, necessarily, because Ellzey campaigned with, "Trump supporters love him!" vibes. (The supporters, not Trump.)

Let's wait and see if another Trump backed candidate comes up short. Once is a coincidence, twice is a pattern.

A lot of the "new MAGA" crowd ate it in 2018 and 2020.

If 2022 starts going sideways, I'd expect a lot of GQP folks getting amnesia. Like, if Cheney and Kinzinger survive the primary races, well ahead of November 2020

On this date in 2014, that "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published our profile of Harley Brown, who captured the imagination of the entire nation four years ago when he showed up to a spectacularly insane debate where the recovering drug addict, motorcycle enthusiast, and poster-child for why proper dental hygiene is necessary showed up to the debate wearing biker leathers, and who talked about his best friend, Fat Jack's wife insisting he move out of their cellar for being a lunatic. Needless to say, he did not fare too well against Gov. Butch Otter that night, or in the GOP Primary.

In 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, as well as 2020, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” profiled James Comer, who was a GOP candidate for the Governor of Kentucky in the 2015 elections who somehow lost to cockfighting advocate Matt Bevin, as just before the primary, another candidate in the GOP field, Hal Heiner, accused Comer of abusing his girlfriend in college. While at first, this just seemed like an unsubstantiated slander, Comer's college paramour, Marilyn Thomas, and her mother came forward to confirm the accusations, and add that Comer had also gotten her pregnant, and pressured her into getting an abortion. Which, guess what? Comer also claims to be pro-life without exceptions for rape, incest, or the mother's life at risk... so that was not going to fly well for him. Comer ended up losing to Bevin in the primary by... 83 votes. Comer, as we noted in our write-up, is also pro-death penalty, opposes same-sex marriage, only wants abstinence-only sex education taught in schools, and has "A" ratings on his stance on guns from the NRA.

We thought Comer would have to lay low for a few years, or that his political career could be in jeopardy. Lo and behold, he is already back in the thick of Kentucky politics, and did not just run in the 2016 GOP Primary for the right to replace retiring Rep. Ed Whitfield for his seat for Kentucky's 1st Congressional District... he HANDILY won that primary, with 61% of the vote in a four-way race. Then again, his biggest challenge was from second-place finisher Mike Pape, who CSGOPOTD covered a little ways back for his grotesque ads with Mexican stereotypes sneaking across the border. Once Comer got out of the primary, he coasted to victory over Democrat Sam Gaskins with 73% of the vote, which makes sense what with the Cook Partisan Voting Index having a +18 Republican lean measured for Kentucky's 1st District.

James Comer was placed on the House Oversight Committee after making his way to Washington, D.C., but it doesn’t seem like he takes that responsibility too seriously, based on this May 2017 interview where he does his best to blow off the revelation of what was in former FBI Director James Comey’s memos, and chalks up most of the things Comey claims Donald Trump says that are highly inappropriate if not things that would qualify obstruction of justice in the Trump/Russia investigation as Trump “was just joking. Because we’ve all heard that knee-slapper about Michael Flynn and how we should “let this thing go”. Perfect punchline, right?

It's that sort of cluelessness that has Comer already facing crowds of angry constituents at his town halls, as he’s already been shouted down twice since taking office, particularly on the issue of healthcare.

But it’s not just at town halls where James Comer has seen things get heated. He’s currently the target of a lawsuit after he began taunting and threatening the job of a legislative aide from the Kentucky state legislature who reported Jeff Hoover (who we’ll get around to giving a CSGOPOTD profile to somewhere down the road) for sexual harassment, leading to his resignation. So, an old colleague’s improper behavior isn’t something Comer would like whistleblower protections to apply to, and he’d rather seek out retribution. Isn’t that cute?

James Comer ran for re-election in 2020, and coasted to re-election with 75% of the vote. He thus returned to the capitol to try and stop any progress from taking place in our nation:

James Comer seems to have settled into being a Congressman for the foreseeable future, as he passed on hopping into the 2019 Governor’s race in Kentucky, even though a rematch with Matt Bevin in the GOP Primary would have been far easier for him to win, given how terrible of a job Bevin was doing. Comer was been promoted to be the ranking Republican member of the House Oversight Committee in 2020 (i.e., “do your best to make sure there isn’t any as long as Trump is in office”).

He currently seems content to spread the sorts of aggrieved white privilege that Fox News can’t get enough of, falsely claiming that “crime is on the rise because Democrats are defunding the police”, which isn’t a cause, or effect based in realty.

It bears watching if he tries to run for Governor of Kentucky in 2023 or not.

White House outlines 'hard-nosed approach' to tackling root causes of migration

Washington (CNN)The Biden administration is outlining its "hard-nosed approach" for tackling root causes of migration in Central America, but nearly two months after Vice President Kamala Harris made a trip to the region, its plan is short on new details.

Senior administration officials on Wednesday broadly outlined the pillars of the Biden administration's plan, including addressing economic insecurity and inequality, combating corruption, promoting respect for human rights, countering and preventing violence, and tackling sexual, gender-based and domestic violence.

"For this strategy to be successful, we will have to undertake sustained effort, which is both hard work over time, but also a very hard-nosed approach to having an impact on the ground for the people of the region who are suffering so badly," an official said, conceding that it will be a long-term effort.

The administration's outline of its approach comes after an increase in migrants crossing the US-Mexico border became a political liability earlier this year, overwhelming border facilities and making headlines for poor conditions. The severity of the situation prompted President Joe Biden in late March to tap Harris to oversee efforts with Central American countries to stem the flow of migrants to the US southern border, mimicking Biden's own efforts in 2014 and 2015.

Officer Michael Fanone received threatening, expletive-laced voicemail as he testified about Jan. 6

WASHINGTON — Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone, who suffered a heart attack and traumatic brain injury after being violently assaulted Jan. 6, received a threatening, expletive-laced voicemail on his cellphone as he testified Tuesday about his experience during the Capitol riot.
    said in

“I could slap you up the side of your head with a backhand and knock you out, you little f-----,” the caller said in his message, which Fanone shared on CNN.

"I wish they would have killed all you scumbags, 'cause you people are scum," the man, who used homophobic and racist slurs in his message, continued after repeating former President Donald Trump’s false claim that the presidential election was stolen.

“They stole the election from Trump and you know that, you scumbag. And f---ing too bad they didn't beat the s--- out of you more,” the caller said.

(AP) — A Republican state lawmaker plans to block the University of Wisconsin from instituting COVID-19 testing, masking and vaccination protocols on campuses across the state ... as health officials sound warnings about the rapidly spreading, highly contagious delta variant.

Court told over 'real and substantial concerns' about finances of Trump Organisation

Kay Springham QC said there would be substantial prejudice to the public interest if the Court of Session refused a petition for judicial review, which is seeking to overturn the Scottish Government’s refusal to pursue an Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) against former US president Donald Trump.

Ms Springham, who is representing Avaaz, the non-profit human rights group, appeared at a virtual permission hearing before Lord Sandison on Thursday, arguing for an extension to a three month time limit for the proceedings to be brought.
Lord Sandison told the court that so far as the substantive issues raised by the petition were concerned, they passed the test set out in the statute, which meant he was persuaded “there is enough to have a sensible argument” about the matters set out in the petition.
He noted, however, that prima facie, the petition had been brought outwith the three month time bar period, and the purpose of the hearing was whether he can, and should, exercise the power to extend that period. He is expected to issue his decision shortly.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of misunderstanding the law and misleading Holyrood when insisting the Scottish Government could not pursue a UWO against the former US president.

The government has since set out its position that any decision to apply for a UWO is a matter for ministers, with the Civil Recovery Unit (CRU) dealing with any applications in practice.
Translation: Trump might be in deep, hot water regarding his Golf Course in Scotland.

Already being downplayed by the Fox News and the like. "Anyone can make a call and leave a voicemail. "There is no way to know if this is a Trump supporter like the voice claims or if it was someone who is trying to make Trump Supporters look bad. After the way Officer Fanone betrayed his fellow officers and the country we can not put it past him."
