A Republican Texas lawmaker who attended the January 6 pro-Trump rally, which preceded the attack on the U.S. Capitol, has denied the day's events were an insurrection.

Kyle Biedermann made the claim during a debate on Thursday about a a controversial GOP elections bill dubbed the SB1.

Democrat Erin Zweiner tabled an amendment to prevent participants who encouraged or participated in a state of federal insurrection from becoming a voter assistant, The Dallas Morning News reports.

These Black Women Are Marching To Protect Voting Rights—And Our Democracy

This Saturday marks the 58th anniversary of the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his celebrated “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. To honor the occasion, which became a catalyst for the Voting Rights Act of 1965, over 100 organizations will gather on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and in cities across the country to show their support for voting rights and demonstrate against the most recent wave of voter suppression. This year, Republicans, claiming voter fraud, have restricted access to the polls following a historic election turnout in 2020, bolstered by Black and brown communities.

During that first march on August 28, 1963, Black women were not allowed to be at the forefront. In fact, they were forced to stage an entirely separate demonstration from men on Independence Avenue, despite the fact that they played critical roles organizing the day and were mainstays of the larger movement. This included women like Ella Baker, who helped Martin Luther King Jr. form the civil rights organization Southern Christian Leadership Conference and is now known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, and Dorothy Height, another core organizer as president of the National Council of Negro Women. Ultimately, only one woman, Daisy Bates, was allowed to speak that day—she gave the 142-word “Tribute to Negro Women Fighters for Freedom” speech.

Really appreciated this article showcasing the important work and efforts of these women out there trying to fight the good fight on voting rights. Marching today 58 years after the March On Washington at a time when the GOP is working in earnest to make sure that black people and minorities in GOP controlled states know their place. Voting rights for minorities is once again under attack all these years later and here we are marching again. GOP tried to get millions of black votes tossed out January 6th. And they even supported insurrection to do it. After all that carnage and craziness the GOP in Congress STILL sat there and tried to toss out black peoples votes.

Recall how the GOP only calls into question the integrity when Democrats win but never when they win.

Meanwhile the vast majority of confirmed cases of voter fraud have been done by those trying to elect Republicans.

Its always incredible how one side demands everyone plays by the rules but never does on their end.

How do people think that voting occurs? That people just turn in a slip on who they voted for, and absolutely nothing else?

States have always had voter rolls. They've always verified votes and addresses. And to commit voter fraud on a scale to tip any election, you'd need fake names and addresses in the thousands. And then you'd need at least a few hundred people to impersonate those thousands, over and over again.

And in this conspiracy of hundreds, you'd need none of them to be recognized or caught.

But because people like yourself don't understand basic logistics, we get ignorant posts like this.

Imagine working for the state government where your job is to verify the existence of each legal voter when you ask if they want to register and every few years checking in if they moved or changed names, or maintaining whatever electoral system your state uses to count ballots, and all the yahoos that call every day with baseless claims but you're forced to humor them.

It's soul draining & makes you question if people actually want to learn civics or just a version of politics that makes their lives have meaning.
