Default Batman Chronology “Year One” - “No Man’s Land”

I did this for myself and then I thought “hey, utilize your nerdiness and help others”. Of course, this shouldn’t have to be said buuuut, obviously I’ve missed some things here and there. Also, my order isn’t perfect. This is just a suggested reading order, but feel free to change it so it fits well for you.

    A few things...

During the first 100 “episodes”, Jim Gordon will be referred to as “Lieutenant”, “Captain”, and “Commissioner”. No matter what it says in the actual comic, Gordon is a “Captain” from the end of Year One until Dark Victory. After Dark Victory, Jim Gordon is Commissioner.

Superman was a serious problem. John Byrne apparently was under the assumption that his entire run of Superman happens during Batman’s Year One and Two (and so on) so we’ll act accordingly.

Also, “Season 4”, aka “The Dark Knight Rises”, are “deleted” episodes from the first three “seasons”. You can skip it entirely if you want.

AZ = Azrael, NW = Nightwing, CW = Catwoman, TEC = Detective Comics, LOTDK = Legends of the Dark Knight, SOTB = Shadow of the Bat

And finally, yes, you’re correct, all my “season” titles are lifted from the Bat-flicks. Oh well.

Check out “The Real Batman Chronology Project”. It’s where I was able to decipher where most of these “episodes” go during the first “season”. Such a fantastic site. Naturally, and something I encourage you to do with your own order, I looked over this site and took it as a basis, but then did my own thing based on certain circumstances.

I will come back and explain my order, but for tonight, just wanted to get it out there.

Honestly, I hope this helps any new Bat fans trying to get into Batman OR I hope it helps current Bat fans with their chronology. Enjoy!

    Aaaaand heeeeere we go!

    Very nice Job.

I see that you have put some LOTDK issues before earliers ones, I don't think it's logic.

You should include "Batman: Year One" as Ep.0

You seem to be missing :
    • Batman: Second Chance - Batman #402-403, 408-416
    • Batman annual #11
    • Year Two - Detective Comics #574-578 + Batman: Full Circle
    • Harvey Dent - Detective Comics #580-581
    • Sole Survivor - Detective Comics #582
    • The Ratcatcher - Detective Comics #585-586
    • For the love of Ivy - Detective Comics #589 (back-up)
    • Dumpster Slasher - Batman#414, 421-422
    • Dark Knight, Dark City - Batman #452-454, 633
    • Robin: Reborn - Robin #1-5 <- this story is linked to Batman #455-457 and Detective Comics #618-621
    • Death Mask - from Batman Chronicle #1
    • Commissions - from Batman Chronicle #2
    • Riddle of the Jinxed Sphinx - from Batman Chronicle #3
    • The first cut is the deepest: The secret orgin of Mr. Zsasz - from Batman Chronicle #3
    • Workin' my way back to you - from Batman Chronicle #3
    • Conspiracy - Legends of the Dark Knight #86-88
    • Citadel - Legends of the Dark Knight #85
    • Infected - Legends of the Dark Knight #83-84
    • Favorit Things - Legends of the Dark Knight #79
    • Falls Upon Solomon Grundy - Shadow of the Bat #39
    • The Nobody - Shadow of the Bat #13

Also Ep 100 is "Turning Point" ! I do not thing at all turning point fits here. Because before "Turning Point" there is the first halft of the "New Gotham" storyline that happens.
You should include "New Gotham", "Gotham Central" and "Bruce Wayne: Murederer/Fugitive" in your timeline. Because some events in this run complete No Man's Land.
For exemple the consequences of No Man's Land on Gordon or How they remove Poison Ivy from Central Park.

    Keep it up

Thanks for the work man! I understand you how much that is hard.

I've been putting a modern reading order since last year (it's almost a complete year of reading Batman and tirelessly working on a reading order actually, and this topic is perfect for me to put it since I'm getting now on No Man's Land), if you don't mind I'd like to share it too (and it's not divided into editions like yours):

My readind order list so far, there are a myriad of different reasons they are place in this order (one thing you should ignore is the rank of Gordon after the Dark Victory, he is already a Commissioner, but some stories after that they call him captain, it's inevitable):

    1) Batman: Year One

    2) Shaman

    3) Monster Men

    4) Mad Monk
4.1) Prey (Yes, The Man who Laughs comes right after Mad Monk, to get this reading order right Prey happens in the end of the Mad Monk story (but before Batman mentions the warehouse full of corpses), when some time passes and Julie Madison goes and gets established in Africa).

    5) The Man who Laughs

    6) Gothic

    7) Venom

    8) The Long Halloween

    9) The Collected Lengends of the Dark Knight (Blades and Hot House)

    10) Night Cries (Gordon just got promoted to Commissioner)

    11) Dark Victory
    11.1) Catwoman When in Rome

    12) The Gauntlet

    13) Robin Year One

    14) Faces

    15) Terror

    16) Batgirl - Year One

    17) The Cat and the Bat

    18) Other Realms

    19) King Tut's Tomb

    20) Tales of the Demon

    21) Nightwing - Year One

    22) Batgirl - Special

    23) The Killing Joke

    24) Ten Nights of the Beast

    25) The Cult (One of the best stories I've read of Batman, here he establishes his time as batman as "almost a decade")

    26) Arkham Asylum: A Serious house on serious earth

    27) Death in the Family

    28) Anarky in Gotham City (Detective Comics #608-609) and Anarky in Tomorrow Belongs to Us (Batman Chronicles #1)

    29) Blind Justice

    30) The many deaths of the batman

    31) A lonely place of dying

    32) The Last Arkham

    33) Knightfall (Prelude to Knightfall, Knightfall, Knightquest, Knighsend, Prodigal and Troika) - More than 100 editions

    34) Anarky - Metamorphosis

    35) Azrael #3-14 (To understand where and how Azrael is before Contagion)

    36) Contagion

    37) The Chalice

    38) Legacy (Bane of the Demon #1-2 happens amidst Contagion, Bane of the Demon #3 happens after Chalice and Bane of the Demon #4 happens before the Catwoman prelude to Legacy)

    39) Azrael #36-39 (To understand Azrael and Bane encounter before the Cataclysm)

Here enters one major contradiction/error in this chronology (I've counted 8 until No Man's Land, which is a small number for hundreds and hundreds of editions).

In this chronology of mine, the first time Bruce calls Selina by name is right in the beginning of The Long Halloween if I remember correctly, but it seems like he already knows her by name before that. He actually dates her in one of this stories (The Long Halloween or The Dark Victory).

The thing is, on Batman #499 (Knightfall), long after TLH he encounters her in his private plane and she introduces herself ("My name is Selina Kyle, Mr. Wayne - we met at a charity function...").

TLH was published after Knightfall, and that was the thing, but ignoring this problem, it's possible to fit it in the chronology.

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw that he already knew Selina in The Long Halloween. I don't really remember if they date then but I think they already date at least once. Selina's dress and hairstyle in Long Halloween were referenced in Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive when Bruce is remembering everyone he broke up at the grand hall of Wayne Manor.

Knightfall? That's really late. After Tim became Robin, over a decade after Bruce became Batman, only then Selina introduced herself? It doesn't make sense, even if the sense came from getting used to the popular idea of Selina and Bruce dating at the same as Batman and Catwoman fighting. I'm going with Long Halloween.

I'm the same as you, I go with TLH. One interesting thing by the way is the first time in this chronology that is show they know Selina is catwoman, if I'm not mistaken is on The Cat and the Bat in Batman Confidencial #17 when Barbara as Batgirl sees catwoman and thinks "Selina Kyle. Catwoman."

Luuuucy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!!!

After work tonight, I’ll detail why I put what where.

Among other things, I need to remember to detail the “Justice League, Trinity, Ra’s Al Guhl, Robin, Green Arrow, Teen Titans” situation. Haha!

Also, I need to explain “Mad Love” and some pre-Crisis stories. And a lot of other stuff. I will get to it later tonight!

    To JB

Actually, half of the things you listed are there! It’s a big list so I understand why you missed some stuff. And as for the other half, explanations tonight!

And of course, again, this is just a base. Obviously if you have a “better” order, use it!
