    Default Cover Contest-May 6/May12-2020:"Stripped"

Lots of these contest covers remind me of old comics from a big old cardboard box from my childhood, of course not all of those comics even had covers.
I remember comics from the sketchy old used book store, dumped in a bushel basket, on sale for a dime
or in the case of an old DC GI Combat giant I had only a quarter for a sixty cent comic.
Of course this giant had the top half of the cover missing.
Hopefully our posters know a little comic history about newsstand comics and unsold return copies.
Dealers cut the top or all of the covers and returned them for credit, promising they would destroy the remaining comic.
Not all were actually destroyed, many made it to collections. Many of these "stripped" books are still out there today.
This contest may be harder to find a good example of , but i hope you have fun searching.

Post a cool comic with a partial cover , cut for unsold return, that somehow still survived.

Searchers note, unless you are searching on all comic sites like mycomicshop or Heritage, you might want to stick with terms like partial cover or newsstand return.
If you gooogoliate "stripped comic" you might end up with a result you didn't want, it's the internet.

I kept looking for a Captain Marvel one (the ones I found were all small), but stumbled across this beauty. I like how Dale Evans is looking on with SHEER GLEE that this TOTALLY ANATOMICALLY ACCURATE kangaroo is murdering several people and is no doubt giving its rider constant trauma, given his pained expression.

"Go, you gangly beast! Kill! Kill!" Dale Evans can be heard to shout before firing shots from her revolvers further spurring the mad creature into its blood-soaked rampage! Her head tilting back as maniacal laughter echoes off the canyon walls. The tortured wails of the victims falling on her deaf ears.

Roy Rogers is brought in, pleading for sanity, but the last thing he sees is giant kangaroo feet springing towards his skull as Dale Evans coldly states "Happy trails" amidst the screaming.

...but perhaps I'm projecting a bit.

    D.C's House of Mystery #100

The first page is unrelated to the cover, but the tear makes it appear that the Giant Aztec is stabbing the Giant Grasshopper, which would probably be a more interesting story than the actual ones.

Ajax, I too kept my comics in a huge cardboard box, much to the chagrin of my mother. I remember I had a coverless FF #48 (end of Inhumans arc/first part of the Galactus trilogy), which I'd bought as a back issue from a collectibles store. For 35 cents!

    ETA:
Yes, the cover Superboy logo has been torn off and in its place we get .... the first page Superboy logo!

Unfortunately for you by the time this comic came out dealers were granted "affidavit returns" they just had to state which comics didn't sell, they no longer had to send back the cover strips

Because this one’s torn but doesn’t much affect the cover premise, it’s got a villain I’ve never heard of, it features a transition from Tony’s old armor to his new armor, and what I’m sure is a very collectible action figure.

    -M

PS if you use the term "remaindered copy" in your search it will also turn up results.
