Your answer is too vague.
If you start with "Green Lantern" from the Golden Age, it won't really help.
If you concentrate on the trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) you can understand mostly all of the DC Univers.
And as any fan of DC, most don't know who "Krona" and "the hand" is ! So no it's not that important !
I wasn’t really giving an answer just my feelings on Green Lantern’s mythos and how it impacts the greater DC mythology. To me it is important. But if you start with Geoff Johns you’re missing out on some DC cosmic greatness.
Halfway through vol. 2 of Green Lantern it starts getting real juicy. Tales of the Green Lantern Corps gives a pretty good rundown of Krona. Then Emerald Dawn I&II. Green Lantern Corps 201-224 are just great stories with Hal and John at the front and center. GL vol 3 as a whole is among my favorite DC comics.
Geoff Johns’ stuff is a whole other animal but through that relaunch of the Green Lantern mythos I fell in love with characters like Sodam Yat and Karu Sil.
I liked the series “Ion” too.
I stopped following the GL canon after the New Gods crossover during the New 52, thought that was pretty good though. But of course got roped back in with the current Green Lantern by Morrison which I adore
So I have bought the first Omnibus and read it, some really good stuff! Really enjoying it.
From his new52 run, if you've only read Court of Owls and Night of the Owls, you might think he's not bad. But once you've read Death of the Familly, you'll see how bad a writter he is. You might get a slight hope of better when you start Zero Year but when you finish it you can't find it great. And after that, well, some of the worst Batman you could find is here.
I will agree that his pre-Flashpoint Batman works are ok reads.
As noted with other people, start with Geoff Johns run. You don't have to start at the beginning, but find a place in the run where things pick up that look of interest to you.
Anything before that and you'll be reading for...a long time.
Did you finish the whole thing? Would you mind sharing about how long it took you to read that thing, if so? How many days, hours, weeks?
I'm interested in doing somewhat of an informal study on how long it generally takes people to consume comic book content, and I know how big that omnibus is. I know many people's habits differ, but it's a topic that interests me.
