Default Why did marvel not make a secret wars cartoon in the 80s?

Superpowers toys used the superfriends cartoon (renamed superpowers to help sell the toys) to help with the toyline.

Marvels secret wars toys came out right after. Marvel didn't make a cartoon even though they had their own animation studio at the time! (come to think of it why didn't they make a crystar cartoon to promote that toyline also?)

So why didn't they make a cartoon? They had kids books that took place on earth (no battleworld) and had them in a gijoe type team. Like the mask cartoon cap and doom could "call in" any hero or bad guy the mission needed.

So why no cartoon? Would it had helped the toyline or would the toys still fold after a few waves? Why didn't marvel make a secret wars cartoon?

What do you think think about this? Should marvel had made a secret wars (and crystar!) cartoon in the 80s?

As a kid, we were still watching Spider-man and his Amazing friends reruns and Incredible Hulk reruns at the team.

Many of the Secret Wars characters guest starred on those.

There would have to be network interest and someone willing to foot the bill (though I imagine Mattel might've chipped in on that). I don't know if a Secret Wars cartoon was ever pitched or not though.

Pryde of the X-Men though, was supposed to shill a line of action figures from ToyBiz, which is why they made sure the pilot episode prominently featured the Brotherhood.

We pretty much had to wait for the 90's Spider-Man cartoon for that storyline to be aired.

And I was underwhelmed. Almost, actually none of the heroes there would ever follow Spidey in a team setting. They may respect him and even be friends, but literally none of them would ever look to him as team leader. Cap, Tony, Storm, and Reed are all team leaders in their own right and no way Wolverine, Johnny and Ben ever follow him as leader.

Even though he didn't appear in those episodes, I completely agree with you about Wolverine. Heck, Logan even questioned everyone's decision of having Captain America being their leader in the 1984 comic book version of Secret Wars.

Yeah, Logan did appear in Spider-Man, but not in the Secret Wars arc. There'd been a team-up with the X-Men earlier.

Yeah, this was a poor version and was infuriated that Black Cat was included as if she wasn't overused enough in this series. I also thought the Fantastic Four acted pretty jerky.

I liked the show's take on Black Cat so I didn't mind. Plus it was still Spidey's show at the end of the day...

They had a better version of The Beyonder then the Avengers Assemble adaption did. Plus they actually included Doom.

A secret wars cartoon would probably be expensive. It's a pretty large cast of voice actors given the number of characters involved.

Even when they did Secret wars in Spiderman they didn't use all the xmen.

It depends if the voice actors are being paid for doing the show or paid per role.

As for no show in the 80's, that was the comic's job to sell the toys.

Transformers and gijoe both had over 100 characters in the show and the same va would voice 5 to 7 characters in the show! Heck filmation would have the same female va voice ALL the female characters in the same show! In fat albert bill voiced over half the characters on his own!

As for no show in the 80's, that was the comic's job to sell the toys.
As the he-man toy makers kind of said in the toys who made us. "comics sell toys for only a small group but a cartoon sells to everyone."

Not every kid read comics in the 80s but did watch he-man, gijoe and transformers on tv.

DC superpowers lasted twice as long thanks to the cartoon and even snuck in heroes like dr fate and shazam in who wasn't in the cartoon. The fact that marvel had their own animation studio made it more strange they didn't make a cartoon.

Again battleworld was not in the kids books and coloring books. It was more or less mask and gijoe with marvel heroes. They could have made marvels superfriends.

Yeah, think about The Simpsons. Hundreds of characters. The majority of them are voiced by four people - Dan Castelleneta, Nancy Cartwright, Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria (Julie Kavner only does Marge, Patty, Selma and their mother Jacqueline, while Yeardley Smith only voices Lisa).

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends and Incredible Hulk were playing at the time, and usually in a one hour block together.
In the '80s, doing another Marvel cartoon would've felt a bit excessive, unlike today with multiple CSIs and the Arrowverse.
Which, if you think about it, is actually kinda ironic, as the 80s is remembered as being quite excessive.

I think that was largely because they couldn't get all the voice actors. The majority of the voice actors for the X-Men cartoon were culled from the Vancouver theater scene and lived in Canada. Storm though, had two voice actors in the first season. One in the pilot and one they switched to afterward. They were able to get one of them because she could get to where they were able to do recordings.
