Yeah Brian's in the middle of a PIS breakdown and it's so stupid! This road has already been travelled by Brian, we have his view on the subject of the sword. However with the power of retcon, he can do a complete 180. Yay!
I agree that I do not like the simplistic take on Brian's breakdown. They used the Sword which he should be at least familiar with, while I think they could have him do something bad as Black Knight of Morgan so guilt would lead him down this path and make it more beliavable.
Poor Brian, his plot is basically the C-plot in a book that he used to lead. We didn't even see him on-panel deciding to not use the sword at first, did we? Just had Betsy narrating it while she buried the sword, a decision that lasted what, an issue?
And general rule of thumb: when having a new, or at least different, character take up the mantle of an old one, tearing down the old one to make the new one look better is the worst way to do it.
He’s clearly being set up for greater things. Y’all do know what serialized storytelling and character intra-conflicts are, right?
Its just being done in a basic and boring way.
But if you like it thats cool.
I don't have any confidence that he is being set up for greater things. He's not exactly an A-lister, and the attention and plot is elsewhere. This is an Apoclaypse story first and foremost. Hell, the warwolves might have gotten more attention than Brian has.

Wish he would do an arc for Excalibur
