I tried signing up for a "boat-in" in Chicago; you rent a boat that holds 6-8 of your guests -- no mixing of strangers -- and these boats would then watch a movie drive-in style on Lake Michigan. The idea was that you signed up for the opportunity to buy tickets (their way of gauging interest), and I managed to squeeze in before they filled up to capacity. I then got an email saying that I was approved to purchase tickets, and that the email with the purchase link would come soon. After non-delivery of a few weeks, a news report came up about how this project crashed before it could get off the ground, because they either didn't file the paperwork properly with the city, or the city just outright said no (both of which are feasible -- city bureaucracy and pettiness strike once again).
On the other hand, I got to watch Apollo-13 at a drive-in with a clear, starry night, and the audience was pretty heartwarming and cute, cheering on key moments and yelling out "PLAY IT AGAIN!" when the movie ended. Fun times.
