    Default Comic Book Collecting/Reading Pattern

I started collecting comics in March 2019 and I started with the biggest DC event: Crisis on Infinite Earths. Since then I've understood how important crisis comics are so I've stuck with the crisis comics. E.g. Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis. My next cross is Final Crisis. After reading the crisis comics my plan is to fill in the blanks by collecting other comics that have been published between the crisis event. Is this a good idea?

Kind of. You will know the important events that help shape the universe and history, but you probably won’t be informed for the most part of who the characters are in those stories or their status quo. Like you said you read identity crisis and infinite crisis but did you really understand who the characters were involved besides what the story told you? I’m just imagining going in blind to big events is all.

Not to mention if you are just picking up events with the name crisis you might be skipping over other really good event stories, like Blackest Night.

However if it works for you go for it. Like you said you can always go back and fill in the blanks for any story you read.
"It's fun and it's cool, so that's all that matters. It's what comics are for, Duh."
    Words to live by.

Personally id just whatever runs, writers, or characters interest you and go to the crisis series later.

You could read a huge chunk of DC without ever having to read their events.

Its probably going to depend on which characters you want to read tho. If you want to read swampthing or doom patrol or hitman or whatever.. then just read those. If you just want a good superman story just read that. But if you want to see what shapes the evolution of say superman or flash then i guess you cant avoid crises.

Everyone is different when it comes to comics you like.

For me, I'm more of a 'group' collector. All my collections focus on groups of super heroes: Justice League of America, Legion of Super Heroes, New Teen Titans, Justice League International/America/Europe, All Star Squadron, L.E.G.I.O.N. '89-'93, Kingdom Come, JSA, etc...

It's one way of reading DC.

Let me give a little summary of DC crisis and Justice League.

    • 1963-82 - Crisis On Multiple Earths - collects all the pre-modern age crisis/events (6 tpb + 2 team-ups tpb)
    • 1970-73 - The Fourth World by Jack Kirby - Massive Saga with The New Gods, Mister Miracle, The Forever People and Jimmy Olsen - Introduces Darkseid, Big Barda and Orion as well
    • 1982 - The Great Darkness Saga - The return of the great Darkseid
    • 1985 - Crisis On Infinit Earths (aka COIE) - founding event of the modern age of DC
    • 1986 - DC: Legends - direct follow-up to COIE - creation of the modern age Justice League and Suicide Squad
    • 1987-89 - Justice League International - direct follow-up to DC: Legends
    • 1987-91 - Suicide Squad by Johns Ostender - direct follow-up to DC: Legends
    • 1997-06 - JLA - by Grant Morrison, Mark Waid and then others (but they are skippable)
    • 2005 - Identity Crisis - continues the Crisis storyline - prequel to Infinit Crisis
    • 2006 - Infinit Crisis - continues the Crisis storyline - must read the Omnibus version to get O.M.A.C. Project, Villains United, Day of Vengeance, as well as the main event !
    • ???? - 52 - written latter by DC to tell what happens in the lost year after Infinit Crisis.
    • 2007 - Seven Solders of Victory + Final Crisis - concludes the Crisis storyline - must read Seven Solders of Victory as a prequel !
    • 2009-10 - Blackest Night / Brightest Day - Somewhat concluding event of Geoff John's Green Lantern run that will impact all of DC's heros told in Brightest Day - Better to read the 3 massive omnibus of Geoff John's run
    • 2011 - Flashpoint - Flash disruption time - we readers end up following a new earth - DC reboots all it's titles (except Batman and Green Lantern) - it's the start of the New52 era
    • 2011-2016 - Justice League New52 + Forever Evil - Geoff John's Justice League run
    • 2015-16 - Superman: Lois & Lane + The Final Days of Superman + Titans Hunt - stories that make up the "Road to Rebirth".
    • 2016 - The Watchmen + DC Univers Rebirth - More strangeness with the timeline that was disrupted during during Flashpoint - The Watchmen might have a like to this time mess, that's why it should be read, as well as Flashpoint.
    • 2016-17 - The Return of Wally West + Batman/Flashpoint: The Button + Superman: Reborn + Titans: The return of Wally West - all 4 are sequels to DC Univers Rebirth
    • 2017-18 - Superman: The Oz effect + Detective Comics: A Lonely Place of Living + Justice League of America: Panic in the Microverse - stories that make up the "Road to Doomsday Clock"
    • 2018 - Doomsday Clock - conclusion of the Flashpont/Rebirth storyline.
    • 2018 - Dark Knights: Metal - Phase 1 of a new event implying a dark Multiverse
    • 2019 - The Batman Who Laughs + Justice League: No Justice - Phase 2 of the Metal event.
    • 2020 - Justice League by Scott Snyder + ???: The Infected - Phase 3 the Metal event.
    • 2020 - Dark Knights: Death Metal - phase 4 of the Metal event.
    • 2021 - Dark Knights: Speed Metal - phase 5 of the Metal event.

To read the solo hero titles, you don't really need those
For the other heroes, only Batman is somewhat impacted by Final Crisis during Grant Morrison's run.
