Which Batman TPB to read before going into New 52?

I have read some of the pre New 52 but want to collect some of it, would prefer TPB due to prices of floppies maybe



Right now I have Final Crisis 1-7, Infinite Crisis 1-7, Omac Project set, Identity Crisis 1-7



Kind of confused with the Batman RIP, Last Rites and all that where Dick takes the mantle is there a trade that collects all that?

All of that stuff is being collected in the Batman by Grant Morrison Omnibuses. Vol. 1 and 2 are out. Vol. 3 comes out in August.

Looking for a lot of the Tec but looks like floppies are the only way to, as well as the last few issues of Batman up to 713. None of those are collected

'Tec is collected in really goofy ways in there - Face the Face has the first post-Infinite Crisis story, then the upcoming Paul Dini Batman omnibus has most of the 'Tec issues that are concurrent w/Batman by Morrison v1, then after RIP/Final Crisis, the book is a Batwoman book for 11 issues (Batwoman by Rucka), then the collections Arkham Reborn, Batman: Imposters (which is a video game tie in or something weird), and the Black Mirror get you to the end of the pre-New 52 'Tec run.

#713 has never been collected afaik

Gotham Must Be Judged collects Batman #708-709 and the corresponding Batfamily titles in that crossover

Ok, here I go:

New52 is an era in which DC tried to reboot all its titles.
Only 2 univers were only partially rebooted:

• Batman
• Green Lantern

All the other DC Univers were fully rebooted.

The New52 was introduced by the event Flashpoint in 2011.
The New52 era ended in 2016 with the event DC Univers Rebirth.
Some other minor events happed after Rebirth up to the conclusion, Doomsday Clock.
Only "Watchmen" is necessary to have read to understant those events.

During the New52 era Batman appears in 4-5 series:

• Batman - The main storyline told by Scott Snyder - It is written so the reader doesn't need to have read anything before.
• Batman & Robin - The title that somewhat continues what Grant Morrison started
• Detective Comics - Written by various writters, each mini-runs can be read on their own.
• Batman, the dark Knight - A title mainly centered on vilains back-stories - It is a bit disconnected from the main timeline.
• Batman Eternal / Batman & Robin Eternal - 2 maxi-series centered mainly on street crimes and gangsters - 2 because there a some events concerning Robin, that you can follow in Batman & Robin - These maxis can also be read on theire own

Before going back to Batman, here is how the pre-Flashpoint crisis should be read:

• 1986 - Crisis On Infinit Earths (aka COIE)
• 2004 - Identity Crisis
• 2005 - Infinite Crisis
• ???? - 52
• 2008 - Seven Solders of Victory / Final Crisis

Crisis on Infinit Earths is sadly a big crossover and should only be read as so.
So no small tpb for this story, but it is probably the most interresting DC Event/crisis.

Indentity Crisis is a small event, somewhat prequel to Infinit Crisis.

Identity Crisis is much more than the event Infinit Crisis and the story Omac Project. All of the following are important to read:

1. Countdown to Infinit Crisis
2. OMAC Project
3. Villains United
4. Day of Vengeance
5. The Rann-Thanagar War
6. Infinit Crisis

This would be the tpb reading order

After Infinit Crisis, all heroes jumped one year in the future.
What happened during this lost year was later told by DC in 52.
It is not really an event, but a really interesting title to read.

Then happend Final Crisis.
But as a prequel, you should/must read Sevent Solders of Victory, or you will worder about a few things.
There is also a Countdown to Final Crisis, but you should/must skip it.

Let's go back to Batman.
What should you read before New52, well nothing unless you whish to read Batman & Robin.
To understand Batman & Robin, you should know what happened in Grant Morrison's run.
Grant Morrison's run goes as follow:

You can of course complete the Batman and Detective Comics titles if you'd like but the other stories are pretty bad and uncessary for the current runs.
I would suggest completing Nighwing that continues in Grayson: Agent of Spyral.
The maxi series Batman Eternal and Batman & Robin Eternal are also not that bad.


After all this comes the DC Univers Rebirth event.
This new era is called "Rebirth".
It will start out with 3 titles:

1. Batman by Tom King - in just ended not long ago
2. Detective Comics by James Tynion IV - it's over, it was followed by some fillers (that are very good) and now a new run has started by Peter J. Tomasi
3. All-star Batman - an independant title by Scott Snyder in which Batman goes out of Gotham - but not very good

Tom King's run is devided into big plots:

1. The I Am trilogy - in the 3 first tpb - this storyline concludes in the end of his run in the City of Bane story
2. War of Jokes and Riddles - an independant story in tpb 4 - fun to read
3. The Batman/Catwoman relationship - in tpb 5-7 - a bit longish
4. The breakup - in tpb 8-10 - no that bad
5. City of Bane - in tpb 11-12 - I haven't read yet

King sayd he will finish Batman/Catwoman's realationship plot in a mini-serie yet to come.

James Tynion IV's took over after Tom King. The tpb are not out yet. He plans on doing a big Joker War plot over several tpb.

James Tynion IV's run on Detective Comics is composed of mainly 1 storyline. Very interresting about the creation of a new Bat-team

• Detective Comics Rebirth vol.1-7

Detective Comics fillers:

Around 2018 Scott Snyder started a new project that Introduces a Dark Multivers.
It is somewhat an event that impacts the Batman and Justice League Universes.
It is the Metal storyline. It has 3-4 phases:
Phase 1:

1. Dark Days: Road to Metal
2. Dark Nights: Metal
3. Dark Nights: The Nightmare Batmen
4. Dark Nights: Metal – The Resistance

Phase 2 (Justice League):

1. Justice League: No Justice
2. Justice League by Scott Snyder vol.1-ongoing

Phase 2 (Batman):

1. The Batman Who Laughs
2. The Batman Who Laughs: The Infected - tpb to come - the main story is in Batman/Superman vol.1

Phase 3:

1. Dark Nights: Death Metal
2. Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights - ongoing

Phase 4:

1. Dark Nights: Speed Metal - new storyline about the Flash timelines to come

And with all that I think you are up to date on all the main stuff !
There some event in Justice League New52 / Justice League Rebirth that I have skipped because they dont concern Batman directly.

The thing is, it's a poor way to collect some stories.

From Batman #555 to Batman #574 you are in the "No Man's Land" era.
This era is a big crossover over all Batman Title, so with the Batman titles only, you've only got part of the story.
For this era the tpbs or omnibus are the very best way to collect.

After No Man's Land, you've got the "New Gotham" era - but the most interresting part is told in Detective Comics by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker.
While in Batman, you've got a gang war told in War Games.

After that you've got the crossover "Bruce Wayne: Murderer / Fugitive", by Brubaker and Rucka again.

Then the story Hush by Loeb. This storyline continues in Paul Dini's Detective Comcis and Streets of Gotham - it's a big Hush/Catwoman storyline - very fun to read.

Then you've got 2 great interludes: Under the Red Hood & The Return of Ra's Al Ghul.

Only after comes the big Grant Morrison Run. But be carefull, a big part of Morrison's run is not told in the Batman title !
