I would say in the case of a few it is a no brainer. The Lizard? Turns into a giant Lizard. Scorpion? His origin had to do with getting Scorpion traits and such. Kangaroo? Super powered jumper. Vulture? A bird of prey with wings.

Because it would be really silly to name people that dress up as animals after rocks.

Because the animal kingdom fits the character.

To emphasize a parallel with Spider-Man --- as Spider-Man himself derives his powers and motif from an animal and acquired said powers through a freak accident of science, so many of his enemies are also patterned after animals and have as well acquired their powers through freak accidents or misapplication of science. In TV Tropes parlance, this would be called "Thematic Rogues Gallery," and like many Thematic Rogues Galleries, Spider-Man's parallels him in certain respects.

Morbius was ASM 102. If I would rank my Dirty Dozen bad guys few are animals. In no particular order. 1: Green Goblin ( Norm). 2: Carnage. 3: Venom ( Brock). 4: Kingpin. 5: Kraven. 6:Mr. Negative. 7:Hobgoblin ( Kingsley). 8: Ock ( Otto). 9: Lizard. 10: Rhino. 11: Mysterio. 12: Morlun.

The Cat isn't named after an animal?

I dont think the Cat in the Spiderman comics is named after the animal but rather the ancient mythological monster from Greek stories. You know the one. The one the furry little guy who ate mice, played with yarn, jumped on people's laps and drank milk.

    A) Because from the start, a spider, as in "Spider-Man", is also named after an animal.

    B) It is simply more fun.

I recall, there was, on Season Two of Ultimate Spider-Man, when Otto was mad-scientist-ing his own "Sinister Six".
