That's actually a really good fight.

They're pretty evenly matched. Ryan spent most of his childhood being turned into a badass by Diabolico. The guy was soloing monsters unmorphed. Merrick, meanwhile, was the bodyguard of a princess (who, current day events inform us, probably got kidnapped by supervillains and needed to be rescued, like, a lot), so he comes with some pretty solid badass credentials of his own.

They both have close-combat and ranged weapons, and both have a zord with a warrior mode. I'd give the edge slightly to Merrick on the ground, because he probably has a little bit more life experience (of being a total badass) than Ryan, given that he's older and probably saw a little more combat before we met him.

(of course, the big question mark is what Ryan was getting up to, before we met him ... but Diabolico always planned to use him against Mitchell and Lightspeed, so he probably wouldn't have risked Ryan's life needlessly in the interim)

Zord fight is a lot more even. Sure, Merrick has three zords, but only the hammerhead can fly (by swimming through the air, natch) while the Solarzord is flight capable in both modes IIRC.
