Default Best #1s of all time

Wanted to start a thread to discuss #1s. Potentially one of the hardest issues to bring out. It has to set up what comes next and show you what the creative team can do.

What are some of your favourite #1s?

I’ll start with who I think is a MASTER at first issues: Brian K Vaughan.

Ex Machina, Runaways, Y: The Last Man and of course Saga have brilliant opening issues. He’s never wrote anything that hasn’t made me want to at least check out issue 2.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Maybe not the greatest of all time. But Superior Spiderman Vol 1 number one for me ranks up there for me. it was the start of my favorite Spiderman story line of all time.

The Walking Dead #1. A great first issue that really has so much heart and potential. Who knew it would grow into such a huge franchise.

Totally agree, CaptainEurope. This goes without saying, but I LOVE this era:

I owe my undying love of comics to X-Men #1 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee.

I had read comics before that issue, but from what I recall, all of them were middle entries to ongoing stories. X-Men #1 was the very first comic, IIRC, where I started reading from the first issue and kept reading the next issues for a while.

Obviously, with Jim Lee leaving for Image, I jumped shift from the X-Men after issue 13, I think. Started reading more Image comics, but the impression X-Men #1 left on me has yet to fade.

It did have a great surprise at the end. But I have to correct you. The artist's name is Mark Bagley. I had the privilege of getting his autograph & sketch at C2E2 in Chicago some years back.

This. I appreciated how packed the issue was with set up and story. Very compressed in an age of decompression.

Thanks, CJStriker. Heroes Return left quite the impression on me. Still haven't recovered yet, TBH.

Runaways #1. Following suit with The Thunderbolts twist, Vaughan sets up another great premise
