Legacy vs Original Characters

I guess so lol, but that's another weird bit of trivia that can be lifted right out and not miss out on anything. The Robin identity was created for Dick first and foremost, Bruce having it for a bit when he was a kid and then it being retconned out/barely being mentioned afterward shows that we shouldn't put much stock in it.

Clark being Nightwing and Dick taking on a mantle inspired by it holds more weight.

Agreed, but I don't really consider Dick a legacy of Clark, either. I go with the usual definition of the word within our hobby and ignore the rest.

I mean yeah, I don't either, but I've seen the argument come up.

For me, Nightgwing was just a fun side thing Clark did and wasn't the identity he was known for, so Dick made it his own to the point where it's original connection has been lost (which is very unfortunate IMO, I think it was most of the appeal for me as an identity for him to mix homages for his two heroes. Now it just comes across as a generic Gotham vigilante ID).

If Barry weren't at the forefront among the speedsters at the moment, that might be an option for him (as well as the others, come to think of it).

And DC has since been focusing more on Barry as The Flash (including a TV series), so it would be silly for them to try and change the focus on what they refer to Barry as.
Wally, on the other hand, would have been a perfect candidate for renaming to get him back into the spotlight prior to the recent changes as a result of Infinite Frontier, but DC came up with that different solution for now.

Yeah, Barry is going to be around a long, long time. He may not be as iconic as the Trinity (and almost certainly never will), but he's a lot closer to that than back in '85 when the name Barry Allen had no currency with the average American.

At this point, those and other codenames may be options for other speedsters, but not Barry. For mainstream America, he's the numero uno Flash. I know that stinks if you're fans of another one, but I don't know what else to say. Maybe thirty years down the road, things might change.

What is the speed codename that resonates the most with people? The Flash! Who is currently at the forefront? Barry!

Now if someone else was at the forefront as the Flash, would his or her fans be talking about changing his/her name? Nope. Wouldn't blame them, either.

Guess you don't watch a lot of CW Flash - it was Jay's nickname on his Earth like how Barry gets called the Scarlet Speedster.
