He was pretty much absent during the satellite era of the JLA. He did appeared as a guest star for 2 issues in the satellite era JLA.

Dude, you rock! One question, though. I'm researching the last issues of the series, and Batman definitely seems to be absent. Are you sure you didn't miss him leaving once again?

Yes, but then he apparently came back.

If he was truly a member, but absent, in the final issues, I'm trying to find out when he quit again, because the summary for the series finale says that there are only two members left, J'onn J'onzz and Vixen, before Vixen quits and J'onn is all that's left.

The official Index to The Justice League of America covered the entire original series noting when Leaguers joined and Left and rejoined. Members of the League that did not appear in the issue indexed but was still a member at the time were noted as not being in the issue. The last issue noted Batman as not appearing in that issue and previous issues did not list him as leaving.

Lonewolf's post was epic, but I just need to boil it down to some of the highlights.

This is how it was prior to the first total restructuring, with 16 people having been a member at one time or another, 15 of which were all in by the end. This seems to clash with Identity Crisis, however, which portrays the members at the time of Sue Dibney's rape as being 13 of those 15, minus Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl. Any thoughts?

A fun look at the JL roster changes is following the evolution of the "JLA Mail Room" header.

I think the last issue Batman appeared in was issue 254 which was the new JLA's battle with Despero. It was actually a very good story arc and the one time I thought that the new JLA would be an acceptable replacement for the old.

He was more or less absent during the satellite era after he left earth to build new mars. He came back for a 2 parter involving the old despero and then the epic issue 200 where the original big 7 fought the new members.
After that , he then came back during the earth-mars war which herald the start of the detroit era after aquaman disbanded the original league because half of the team were on earth 2 for weeks unknowingly even though for them , it's only a few hours due to some time distortion created by the monitor (i think).
In post-crisis continuity , the earth-mars war never happened , martian manhunter never left the league.

As mentioned , batman last issue with the detroit era league was 254. Don't think he ever quit , he was instrumental in the defeat of despero in that issue.

Actually, Batman's last issue was #255.

Even Wizard Magazine, who hated the Detroit League, made that storyline one of their Greatest JLA Stories of All Time.

It's very easy to explain those two missing from Identity Crisis.

Wonder Woman was a founding member of the JLA . . . until after CoIE. When they rebooted Wonder Woman, she hadn't come to "Man's World" until after the JLA had started, and Black Canary was retconned in Wonder Woman's place for the post-CoIE origin of the JLA.

Wonder Woman was re-retconned back into being a founding member of the JLA as a result of Infinite Crisis, which was in 2005-2006. Identity Crisis was from 2004, before the change back.

As for Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman, she originally became a member before CoIE. A couple of years after CoIE, we had the Hawkworld fiasco where they had to explain / erase a lot of the continuity of the Katar and Shayera Hol because they made the Hawkworld series take place in the (then) present-day, even though they had already had stories of Katar and Shayera as Hawkman and Hawkwoman after CoIE.

    - Amazing World of DC Comics #14 (March, 1977) lists Adam Strange as having "Honorary Member" Status. This had to happen behind the scenes, if to be believed, just haven't narrowed down what issue yet. This has been disputed since.
    - Superman and Batman's retroactive membership status post Crisis on Infinite Earths/pre Infinite Crisis.
    - Hawkgirl changes her name to Hawkwoman. (Pre Crisis on Infinite Earth only).
    - Hawkwoman's first appearance with the League using the Hawkwoman alias. (Pre Crisis on Infinite Earth only).
